Budding enthusiasts. I am of the belief that John Smith emphaises maximum velocity flying work in the last 6 weeks only due to the high CNS fatigue associated with its implementation. This information came from afriend who has spent time with them. Any thought on when maximum velocity work should commence?
bump I have same question.
It would depend on the annual set up. Most plans get faster in the later stages of each phase and the more phases, the shorter the time at maxV per phase but the probable total of more overall.
1:If you think it is too stressful to maintain for a prolonged period, why wouldn’t you break it up into more phases?
2:You also need to define maxV. Do you mean hitting the existing maxV or improving on it?
3: Are you just hitting it (at the end of a 60m for example), or holding it for longer (maxV from 60m to 80m for instance)?
4: How are you blending maxV with slightly sub maxV technical work (critical for the top guys- you can’t set a world record in practice every day)?
I would generally be doing both, hitting max V as well as maintaining it, sometimes in same session, sometimes different.
And seeing my PB as being 11.48, sub maximal work isnt done as much for me. I find my mechanics overtime improved from drills and extensive tempo, although some sub maximal and little bit of intensive tempo is done just for technique work over 40-80m.
I just realized something…probably obvious to all of you. Fly in runs like flying 30’s and 20’s won’t improve max v in elite sprinters because even at race speed max v is not achieved until 60-70 meters. Am I correct with this thinking? A 30 m fly-in with a 20 m acceleration will not even touch max v in an advanced sprinter.
i would just think that they would use a longer run in so they would be hitting max v when in the fly zone
No, in fact the easier, albeit longer, acceleration allows more resources to be applied to that section of the race. Check the film of Ben in Zurich 86 when he ran from an easy start and crushed from 50 to 80m.
With 11.48, I wouldn’t be concerned about a 6 week limit to the top speed period as it’s likely that your top speed will be changing for the better for a significant portion of the year.
For an example of max speed drills done a max and sub max, check out the GPP download available from the site store.
Ya im getting the GPP download + CFTS both soon.
Another question, how much maximal speed work is done with world class sprinters yearly? You said you cant set a world record every practice, so one will be in 95% range during most of speed work?
its all on the van dvd.
