Justin Gatlin pro day results

Tennessee (March 13)
There were 25 NFL clubs in attendance – with Bengals tight ends coach Jonathan Hayes and Rams linebackers coach Mike Cox in attendance. Twelve prospects took part, including track athlete Justin Gatlin, working out indoors in Field Turf.

WR Justin Gatlin (5-11 7/8, 195): Ran a 4.45 and a 4.42 in the 40. Had a 40 ½-inch vertical jump, 11-foot long jump, 4.4 short shuttle and 7.36 cone drill and 12 reps in the bench press. The former Olympic sprinter faces long odds of getting signed.

Is 195 JustinGatlin’s weight? That’s pretty heavy for someone who’s 5’11"!

How is the 40 timed? Is that 40 yards from the first step?

How much weight is bench pressed?

Thanks in advance

For the Europeans that are not used to combine reults, what are teh average results of the NFL guys in such tests?

He’s probably going out for receiver so his 40 time is above average (although I’d expect faster considering his track experience and 100m times).

Average receiver 40 probably mid 4.5 range.

Weight bench pressed is 225 lbs. Probably around 8-10 reps is average for receivers.

Avg. vert around 34 inches or so. His vert is very good. As well as his broad jump.

40 is timed from first movement of the runner. Timer reacts to runner, not runner reacting to timer.

so is the comment The former Olympic sprinter faces long odds of getting signed.
justified then?

His 40y time seems far slower than he’s capable of, so he may be out of sprint shape and speed is what he would need to show to separate himself from the rest of the pack.

Chances of him doing anything in the NFL are minimal. In terms of 40 time, he is nothing spectacular. Couple that with no football experience and you just have a guy out there who runs with better mechanics than most.

Agreed. There’s really no other reason for a one time world record holder in the 100m to run that slow in a 40. He should be able to wake up and crap a 4.2 at least.

Thats what football training does for you.

i’m not so sure- his bp rep nos are not that good- maybe he just hasn’t been doing a hell of a lot.

Someone said he was training with some combine guru in the atl.

Charlie, you have said for guys who do football or team sports or agility sports that Agility training is not needed if they Play every weekend.

However, how would you handle a guy like this? a life time of Limited to no Agility work and at the age he is now
eg wk set up perhaps?
mon - acc - agility
tue - tempo
wed - acc - speed
thurs - tempo
fri - tempo
sat - Game
sun - tempo or off

so - more work on Agility and ball/team play than on Acc and speed?
Or even no Designed Speed days - just a bit of acc and speed before each Agility practice session?

Do you mean combine training made him slower?

Good job removing ur last post bc i was coming for ya. Yeh thats my point the combine training made him slow, keep during the things that have made you a world class athlete, nothing more nothing less!!!

JG’s agility times are not very good at all. I have a 240 lb 16 year old defensive lineman who runs a 4.2 and 7.30 for agility times.

The scouts could care less what his agility times were they wanted to see him run that 3.8 40yd dash.

good point generally but is he for sure training? If he is, the combine trainer better hope no-one catches his name.

Some one said he was training in Atlanta I believe. His explosiveness was still pretty good with the 11 foot BJ, but I have to believe that he is at least a 4.2 man.

Rule of thumb is .4 to .5 beneath the 40 on the Pro Agility. Not very agile at all.
