Tennessee (March 13)
There were 25 NFL clubs in attendance – with Bengals tight ends coach Jonathan Hayes and Rams linebackers coach Mike Cox in attendance. Twelve prospects took part, including track athlete Justin Gatlin, working out indoors in Field Turf.
WR Justin Gatlin (5-11 7/8, 195): Ran a 4.45 and a 4.42 in the 40. Had a 40 ½-inch vertical jump, 11-foot long jump, 4.4 short shuttle and 7.36 cone drill and 12 reps in the bench press. The former Olympic sprinter faces long odds of getting signed.
His 40y time seems far slower than he’s capable of, so he may be out of sprint shape and speed is what he would need to show to separate himself from the rest of the pack.
Chances of him doing anything in the NFL are minimal. In terms of 40 time, he is nothing spectacular. Couple that with no football experience and you just have a guy out there who runs with better mechanics than most.
Agreed. There’s really no other reason for a one time world record holder in the 100m to run that slow in a 40. He should be able to wake up and crap a 4.2 at least.
Charlie, you have said for guys who do football or team sports or agility sports that Agility training is not needed if they Play every weekend.
However, how would you handle a guy like this? a life time of Limited to no Agility work and at the age he is now
eg wk set up perhaps?
mon - acc - agility
tue - tempo
wed - acc - speed
thurs - tempo
fri - tempo
sat - Game
sun - tempo or off
so - more work on Agility and ball/team play than on Acc and speed?
Or even no Designed Speed days - just a bit of acc and speed before each Agility practice session?
Good job removing ur last post bc i was coming for ya. Yeh thats my point the combine training made him slow, keep during the things that have made you a world class athlete, nothing more nothing less!!!
Some one said he was training in Atlanta I believe. His explosiveness was still pretty good with the 11 foot BJ, but I have to believe that he is at least a 4.2 man.
