Jamaica's Powell pulls up injured in Rome

ROME, July 11 (Reuters) - Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell’s Olympic preparations suffered a setback on Friday when he pulled up in his heat of the 100 metres at Rome’s Golden Gala with a groin injury.
The former world record holder finished fifth in the heat despite pulling up abruptly at the end and qualified for the final in 10.19 seconds but decided not to race on.
The 25-year-old lost to Usain Bolt at the Jamaican Olympic trials last month after seeing his compatriot steal his world record in May by running 9.72.

Does anyone know the status of the coaching relationship? There was the suggestion of a problem before.

I’m a big Powell fan but I hate to say it, he seems like he is going to be a bit of a dud unfortunately.

Sucks but he seems to be his own worst enemy. Couples with the manager it seems.

Oly 100 final is gonna be a 20m blow out with these injuries.

How is Powell supposed to be able to even run a 9.9 if he cant go 100% speed. The only 100% run hes done was the heats at the olympic trials. Yet we’re looking at possibly going sub 9.7 for a olympic gold.

Sad that his talent is not being fulfilled, however they need to accept some of the blame for making the same mistakes.

I think he should start thinking about coaching changes perhaps, but usually that just leads downhill after, but if all hes doing is coming and getting injured, i dont see a point in staying.

Maybe if he LISTENED to his coach those things wouldn’t happen?

Sounds to me like the manager has tried a power play to push the coach out. (Often the coach wants to control where an athlete races according to timing and conditions while the manager wants to control it according to who pays the most.

Dude is choking to the max or his coach is fucked up…

I feel sorry for him :frowning: . Maybe the games are going to get “boring”.

How does getting hurt = choking?
