In-place sprints

What is the value of running on the spot with high knees at maximum speed?
Today I had no access to the track so I planned 10x20sec in place sprints @ 100% for my speed work, but could only manage 8-10 secs for the last 4 reps.
I can say that I have never been more exhausted in my life and could barely complete the workout.
To Charlie and others, what would the CNS involvement be for such a workout? Would it be comparable to sprinting?
Also could someone expect to maintain their speed or even improve by doing this? As I won’t have access to a track for a while.

Thanks

Charlie has produced several pieces of media, including the video on power-speed, that might’ve offered better options.

Having said that, with prior athletes, they benefited very little from in-place sprinting - like on-spot rotary running and the like. And though I agree with regard to the degree of muscular fatigue, it didn’t reflect a high impact to the CNS pool.

Now, in my experience, the power-speed activity that Charlie presented is altogether another matter when performed properly.

Thanks for your reply.
What kind of inspired me to do it for a while was allen wells and his speed ball training, I thought maybe max frequency in place sprinting might have a simmilar effect.

I will check out that power speed DVD. Just one question, What kind of space do you need to perform it? Currently I have a 15x10m garage to train in.

That will work. Though CF’s video extends it out a bit, I typically cover 10-15 meters with most of the routines. Some on grass, other times on the track. Depends on the activity and the degree that loading requires.

Weather was a huge issue with our team this spring and the PS work played a vital part in preparation for the better conditions. atu tana:)

Charlie has stuff like that prescribed for strength endurance, not for speed development.

If you have no access to a track or another adequate surface (grass, etc.), you may benefit more (speed wise) from doing additional weights, plyos, or throws. Even just an extra day off can be beneficial at times.

Ya I think I’ll throw in plenty of explosive hops on the spot and up the intensity of the weights for now, hopefully I won’t lose too much speed.
Thank you
