how important is sleep?

I know the variables…

how much time to train, school, study, sex and other entertainment, and then sleep. I have a time pyramid on “servings” for the above. Playstation? use sparingly…the base of course is sleep!

Since it is 11:30pm…The bell curve…are athletes getting enough (about 8 hours) sleep? Is it possible to be a student athlete and get enough sleep and get good grades while still having a social life?

so many do it every day…so their is evidence that it happens Krasnay! Post your schedule!

I do. Well i dont always sleep good. Buty i def have the time to sleep. I mean i take melatonin probably more than i should but i go to bed at around 1am and wake up around 9 on tues and thurs and around 11 on mon. and wednesdays.

Dwatling, I can’t concentrate with that avatar

i go to sleep about 3, wake up about 12-1!! i guess thats enough sleep. no studying for me tho, just run in arvo, go work (night shift), come home about 1030, have dinner and weights, then chill!

i’ll post my schedule when i have a minute to do it-
it’s partly an issue of stress and worry keeping me from concentrating and doing work efficiently… then i can’t sleep at night, then i’m more anxious… it’s one of those vicious circle situations

I’m usually a very bad sleeper because of stress among other things. But, here’s a question for anyone…why did I get 8hrs sleep last night and was more tired than when I get 5 hours?

Not sure 400. But I would be worried about the compounding lack of sleep over time.

I know what you mean.

I got pb’s in training last night. Went to bed and felt sick most of the night, probably only got 4-5 hours of uniterrupted sleep and went out and did weights this mornig and they were easy.

I know tomorrow or the next day - I will pay

DMA from your point of view, training in the morning could benefit in the short term (ie one day) for higher CNS activities with less sleep as your brain patterns have probably been closer to an “awake” state then when you get a full nights sleep.

Just a theory, obvisouly as you say it will more then likely catch up with you.

I again got 8hrs sleep and I was still tired again today. I’m dead tired right now (4:30pm), but that may be more of a boredom factor than anything.

Here’s another question to go along with my other one…can “boredom” be a factor in your sleep? What I am saying goes two-fold…If you are bored, even if you got 8hrs, will it affect you so much as to mess up sleep patterns (make you drowsy and looking for a good nap) or will it negate any sleep you got (say you get 8hrs but are bored and become drowsy…will it affect you?). Did I explain clearly enough?

400- doesn’t the 8 vs. 5 hours have something to do with REM? like, if you never get into deep sleep, you can’t be interrupted from it and be groggy… and if you do get into that phase and you’re woken up, you end up feeling more tired? i don’t know, maybe.

im not sure what your boredom question means… the only thing i can think of about that, is that when i’m bored i have MORE trouble sleeping.

No Kay…

What I mean is that when I am bored I tend to get really sleepy and fall asleep quicker and I was asking if this was bad if I had 8hrs sleep the night before and I was still tired.

I know that was a bit unclear…sorry.

I have averaged 6 hours sleep for the past year.

Irratable? The other day I punched the wall, and palm striked the notice board in hallway, cutting my hand on the nail in the process.

It’s where I live. In a houseshare with 4 other people who all do differant work shifts. One of them goes out the door at 6.30 in morning.
I’m right by the front door. Then the truck comes along and loads barrells
of beer into the pub on other side of street which is 30 minutes of brain damage… then the twat across the road thinks they are in a Rave/concert at 9 in the morning so the whole street can hear.

I get to sleep at 3 in the morning, ready to be woken up at 8 o’clock sharp.

Sleeping tablets didn’t work, I took 5 and didn’t feel a thing.

I got 4 hours and 40 mins last night and finally decided…

I’m moving before I get permanent brain damage or put someone in serious danger.

Don’t know if this is too boring a response to this thread but here’s some data for K on the importance of sleep:

Brain Behav Immun 2002 Oct;16(5):503-512

Effects of sleep and sleep loss on immunity and cytokines.

Irwin M

Sleep is hypothesized to be a restorative process that is important for the proper functioning of the immune system. Severity of disordered sleep in depressed- and alcoholic subjects correlates with declines in natural- and cellular immunity and is associated with alterations in the complex cytokine network. Sleep loss has a role in mediating these immune changes as experimentally induced partial night sleep deprivation replicates the kind of sleep loss found in clinical samples and induces a pattern of immune alterations similar to that found in depressed- and alcoholic patients.

Curr Opin Pulm Med 2002 Nov;8(6):502-5

Sleep and the endocrine system: new associations to old diseases.

Boethel CD
Sleep and sleep disorders play a prominent role in hormone regulation. Given that sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and diabetes mellitus (DM) are thought to result from obesity, it has been assumed that when the two coexist, the diabetes was caused by the obesity. However, new data has shed light on the effects that SDB, sleep deprivation, and snoring have on glucose regulation. It now appears that in addition to causing daytime drowsiness, cardiovascular disease, mood and memory disturbances, impotence, and car wrecks, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and a lack of sleep also promotes insulin resistance and increased bodyfat. Though data is still sketchy on the optimum management of coexisting DM and OSA, large-scale studies will most likely prove that homeostatic glucose control in patients with sleep apnea will require aggressive treatment of their SDB.

thanks bob, appreciate the info.
it definitely rings true… i realized that one day this week i slept for 6.5 hours and i was actually EXCITED because all the other nights have been under six or ever under 5. i’m noticing already some soreness and ankle and foot pain… not to mention fatigue during games. and everyone seems to be getting sick. hopefully when college stuff is done i can relax a bit, because i really need to find more time for sleep… i really don’t need injuries this year!

and 400- i doubt that the boredom thing is a problem… but i don’t even remember what boredom is anymore, since i’m running around from 5:30am until 12 or 1am! when i get do get bored, i worry about college.

because clem asked… a couple of typical days for me:

5:30am: wake up, go to school for 6:40 gym
7:40-2:40: classes (3 APs, 3 regulars, 2 Indpt. studies, 1 free for meetings/college stuff/food)
2:40-3:30: mentoring/indpt study
3:30-5:30: practice, extra stretching + cooldown until 6
shower, eat, start work around 7:30 or 8 if we have a game
work straight through until 11 or 12, occasionally later (anywhere from 50-200 pgs. reading, plus notes, math, essay-writing…)

on fridays, saturdays, and sundays i usually work 2 out of 3 days, between 12 and 18 hours for gas and food $.

notice that this does not include social time, family time, or entertainment… because it’s pretty rare that i have any. i eat dinner w/my family, go out MAYBE once a week or couple weeks depending on work, and watch the news… and thats ALL.

drop the morning training…and the ind. studies…? Why?

i have to do the morning stuff… it’s twice a week to fill my gym requirement so i can get the credit to graudate, since i obviously do not get enough physical activity as it is! im thinking about switching into a class during a couple frees, but i wake up at 6 on normal days anyway, i’d rather have the free time to do work.

the indpt. studies… one is glass which is low-key and during the day only… the other one- not necessary, not really sure why i am doing it.

once october starts, when am i going to lift??
probably the other 3 days when i am not in gym, i don’t know when else i could.

I don’t understand if school starts at 6:40 why wake up at 5:30? You could get another 45 minutes of sleep by waking up at 6:15. Do you have to walk to school or live very far away from school.

Wow

Looks like the only thing I am doing right is getting 7.5 to 9 hours sleep a night.
