I hope I am not wasting anyone’s time with this thread but here goes.
I have been playing football for 2 years now and due to being ‘undersized’ I have basically concentrated on lifting weights, relying on practice sessions to improve my speed, but now I want to do some specific speed/quickness training to improve my game.
I am 5’ 9" 175lb I play FS or Corner and I run the 40 in 4.73, I haven’t got my agility scores to hand but they are better (relatively) then my 40 time.
i realise I am never gonna play pro but I want to improve my game to the best I can so I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of a training program to improve my speed/quickness.
I will still be lifting in the gym however the volume will be lower over the next month or so.
I hope this isn’t too little/too much information but if somebody could help I would be very appreciative.
How old are you?? If not professional where do you want your football career to take you?? College? Is football fun for you?? By the way your post sounds it seems you need to build confidence more so than speed, especially if your playing DB.
My suggestion is to work on your football skills, keep lifting, run sprints, do tempo workouts. But work on becoming a better DB, you only have to be as fast as the man in front of you. And your not THAT undersized, 5’9 175 isnt bad for a DB. Thats the first thing you need to get out of your head is that you are undersized. Secondly, how do you know that if you bust your ass, go to class, get good grades, and play football that you wont go to the league?? Too much negativity. If your in college, and your lined up against someone who everyone claims is going to the league, and you don’t believe you are ever going to the league, how the hell are you gonna stop this guy??? You never know what can happen, think positive!
Yeah, your definitely not undersized. I’m 6’0 160 and I seem to get along just fine. It’s all about how you play the game, not how big you are. If you are 190lbs, but you’re too timid to come in at full speed for the hit, then you’re not as valuable as the guy who’s only 165 but comes in balls to the wall ready to take somebody’s head off. That’s the guy who’s gonna play, not because of his size, but because of his skill, confidence, and effort.
Also, I find that the best way to get better at your position is to actually play the game. I just got back from a 3 day football camp where all we did was play football, 3 practices a day for a total of 9 practices in 3 days. Just from the sheer number of reps I got I know that I’m a much better player now than I was just a week ago when I went into the camp. Also, it gave me the confidence to know that I can hang with anyone I line up against. I dont remember who said this, but it goes along the lines of “Respect everyone, but fear nobody.”
As far as a training program, I’d say the best place to start (if you havent found one yet) is to go to the “training journals” section of the site and start looking through people’s logs. I think there are about 20 active training journals at the moment, with dozens more that are finished or in the archives. Read through what people are doing and match that with what is right for you. Dont copy and paste everything, and remember to personalize your training to your own needs. Then, once you’ve got a basic plan set out, post it up for people to see. Usually you’ll get some good respones about what you need to change and why. Then make the modifications and and keep refining your program until it looks good to go. After that, all you have to do is stick with it. Good luck.
