Not high at all, only had one athlete who didnt hit those numbers and there parents should have invested money in his books because he wasnt a athlete. Moral of the story he had a better chance being a book nerd vs a decent athlete.
Why? This coach doesnt have 20mins to spend teaching one lift esp the ol’s. In his case I may even drop all ol’s.
Understood on the young man in question.
With women I think that a transition to light loads can be made before hitting those numbers.
Like I said conceptually I agree.
Somewhat situation/audience dependent. If no teaching time exists then I agree drop the OL’s completely as they are non-essential.
Well I agree your method may work for your athletes but I just don’t feel comfortable letting a young developing athlete who cant even do 10 pull-ups lift external loads. If the athlete can hit those numbers they will most likely be able to achieve the two things you mention “posture and execution” very easily.
The original poster said that he wouldn’t be able to attend most of the strength training sessions; this is why I had them during clean/snatch pulls because they are very easy to teach and the athlete could perform them without the coach. Some athletes may be able to advance to hang cleans in 6-8 weeks others may not progress until the following school year, the key is not to rush the development of the athlete just because you are in love with a certain lift.
I should clarify – I personally will not be able to be at even half of their sessions. However, the school weight room is supervised by a guy who I believe knows his stuff and can usually keep an eye out for form.
There are plenty of women who cannot do 10 consecutive pull-ups who are ready and will benefit from actual weight work. In point of fact I have had women who did very well in the weightroom who NEVER could do 10 pull-ups. Females rarely develop the type of upper body strength necessary to this many reps and after 5-6 you have likely hit the objective that you’re looking for anyway.
On the other hand if they cannot do some very basic lower body movements with external load, then you have real issues. Unilateral work has been diagnostic for me in this regard.
Well if he can’t be there then OL’s should be off the agenda entirely. Snatches are not simple! All of these lifts require supervision and instruction for months if not years. Keep it very simple.
How many kids will this person be trying to observe at any given time?
I have actually found snatches easier to teach then cleans.
I would actually keep them away from the gym unless you where there whether they have supervision or not.
In all likelihood, too many.
But the clean is the safer movement esp for this age bracket.
Sweet jesus that had to hurt!
If you could at least be there the first couple of times to take them through the lifts and hopefully educate the weightroom supervisor. I would concentrate on lower body work. Leave out the OL’s and do the upper-body work unloaded. Core work can be done as part of the warm-up and cool-down with your track sessions. Just my two cents.
KISS
Remember, there’s a fellow named Asafa Powell who got pretty messed up due I guess to a lack of adequate supervision from his coach.
Thing is, especially with young athletes, just some general strengthing is all you need. Remember all the threads we’ve had about general vs. specific. I remember one post a long time ago where Charlie mentioned that a push (bench), a pull, and a squat is really all you need and, honestly, I still follow that. I also thik I remember Charlie saying that early in Ben’s career Charlie had him doing 3X10 for anatomical adaption, and later he moved down to 3-5. You are talking about young female sprinters; You are not trying to win the gold in Olympic Weightlifting.
And can somebody mention the name of the person who broke the WR in the 100 by doing pullups? WTF?
I believe i can´t even do 35 continuous push ups but weightlifting has helped me a lot.
I saw that live and it was horrendous. I even thought he had some kind of epilepsy  until they closed up. I believe i am going to stop trying to improve my shoulder rom for deep snatching.
And what’s your point, just because you did it doesn’t make it right or productive. I drunk gin and juice before my workout today and still bench press 385 today.
My point is that its not that necessary to meet those requirements in order to see improvements on the track. I now remember Charlie said something about weekly bodyweight pushups helping with the bench press.
