Greetings everybody, I have a question to pose to you all. When performing tempo work we know that it means up to 75% of our best times for that distance. This is fairly relative until you have someone shouting the times at you or shouting “faster or slower”.
Can this be made more objective and individual by using heart rates??? Using a heart rate monitor??
This has been brought up in the past and the answer is no. Correct me if I am wrong guys but if I recall correctly The reason Charlie gave was because sprinters have the ability to get there heart hearts very high and bring it down fairly quickly with that type of work.
My heart rate has gotten up to 180 before during tempo and that is nowhere near 90% for me as indicated by my “age predicted max” which is also a bullshit equation.
I agree with quick! HR monitors are BS! (actually can be used, but… with great precaution, because HR, bLA, %VO2max are poor predictors of performance and may varry with emotional status, temperature, etc)
If you miss tempo time, then in next rep try to increase/decrease speed! It will take 2-3 reps until you find the right rhytm… BTW, it is better to be slower than faster while doing tempo…
When I used to do this on my own I just set my watch to beep every 16seconds and used that as a guide. Generally I would be just slowing down at the point where it would beep.
