Gasoline Prices

This is getting ridiculous. Cheapest gas in town right now is $4.29/gallon. Just saw on the news, in July of 2002 the average price of gas in Southern CA was $1.29/gallon… 1 year ago it was $1.01 less than now, and gas prices are up 0.47 cents from a month ago…

This is gettin expensive, I am hating driving right about now. 5 dollars a gallon is coming soon I’m thinking. Hooray…

When will this crap end??

haha…i feel ya man. Here in western pa, the average price where i’m at is about $4.05. Although, someone said today, that the price went down a bit.

Hmm I would love $4.05 right now, it cost me 62 dollars to fill up my Honda today. Although I do get pretty good gas mileage, still though…

From this morning’s paper

Agreed petrol is a concern the biggest global impact may come from the increase in the price of rice.

When you peddle your sorry ass to work on a bike.

Seriously though, things are only going to get worse from here on out. Gas is about the same up here and it’s really maddening to put in $40 and barely have a half-full tank.

What do you suppose Dick Cheney was meeting the Big Oil boys for when Bush stole the 2000 election?? To lower the price??

BTW, since gas prices are so high, why not take advantage?
Suppose you drive low mileage each year.
High end cars are down in price far more than the premium on gas. Same for driving holidays. People stay home so hotel prices drop far more than the difference in gas, making the overall trip cost less than before.
Economics 101. you want to buy when people are desperate to sell.
The true cost of Oil is somewhere around 40/bbl and the rest is speculation, much based on a potential war with Iran. What if the Bush admin is out before they can start one and prices drop?
(Please don’t forward this post to the World Wildlife Fed or anything!)

Just bought a used car myself, $1500 under the bluebook, and with a 3 year warranty from the dealer as well–just because they couldn’t have it sitting on the lot anymore (it’s an SUV).

what year?

2001 …

I wrote an essay on the MTEL about how the law of supply and demand is what is really responsible for gas prices and that the overall gas tax should be raised (even though guy is a supporter of the Son’s of liberty) because its overall affect (the gas tax) has little influence on the overall price we pay for gas. And that the market determines the prices (remembering an article I had read 2 years prior in the Globe) And that the money we raise from the gas tax SHOULD go back to the USA to fund infrastructure repair (so the guy doesn’t get a flat driving to Boston on 93 ever again) instead of funding terrorists (even though the guy is a 911 conspiracy theorist). And all these so-called terrorists, USA-hating countries would be funded if we gave them their cash back. I just wanted a good score. I figured heck, no one will take the stance “for” raising gas taxes, and if I can give any argument that looks rational, I will stand out. I’m sure I was probably the one percent crazy enough to take a stance like this. Guy only scored 3/4 bars though. Guy was satisfied though.

just so you know, talking in third person looks really dumb.

also, the idea of raising the gas tax is pretty um… how do i say… well, it’s not like you came up with it or anything.

suspending it on the other hand would be a disaster.

Thanks “The Guy From Boston” will keep this in mind.

Gasoline price is a huge conspiracy by the oil companies. Why isn’t the majority of cars electric or hybrid now?

There have been protests here in the UK this last week. Huge road blocks with bikers and truckers…

Nothing on the fuel protests a few years ago - they caused chaos.

Dr Sprint The reason raising the gas tax or most any tax is a bad idea is because the govt never uses the funds raised in the proper way.

Look at the taxes they put on smokes. All the money was supposed to go back into programs that would help people who had smoke related health issues. It turns out that less than 10% of the money is used for this. The rest is used by the govt to fund projects that most people would never be in favor of, or to pay the salaries of newly appointed personel who administer new agencies that do little or nothing.

You will still get a flat on 93, I will still get caught in traffic on rt 3. We just witnessed one of the biggest boondoggles in history ''The Big Dig" How many billions of tax payer dollars did we waste there? Try deiving to the reggie at 6 pm still massive traffic.

Gas is up mainly due to supply and demand. This I agree with you on.

Using the argument that taxes are always misspent is the usual Republican excuse for why it’s good for you to cut taxes for the top 1%. Well let’s see how that’s worked out. (The top 1% used to pay about 50% of all personal taxes because they had 50% of the money. Naturally, now that they pay less, they have even more.)
Bridges are falling down killing people. Roads and infrastructure everywhere are in poor repair.
Politicians suggest lowering gas taxes instead of going after speculators. The lack of a tax base has caused the US to move from the greatest creditor nation ever to the greatest debtor nation ever, weakening the US dollar, which raises the oil prices relatively.
Also gas consumption moves with infrastructure- IE, when traffic light computers are out of date, average mileage goes down. When you aren’t moving, you get 0mpg. Also tax breaks and payoffs for zoning exemptions allow sprawl, causing longer commutes and less possibility to use alternative public transit etc.

Lack of supply, particularly from the Mid East whether it is lack of ability or lack of willingness to supply is debatable.

Increased demand especially from China along with little price sensitivity to the price in the US.

War concerns and overall stability concerns in the Mid East.

Speculation, i.e. Morgan Stanley saying oil would be 150 by the fourth of July causing the price to jump to almost 140 from around 130 in one day.

Oo and a weak dollar.

You think prices at the pump are bad, natural gas since the beginning of this calendar year has been rising at a pretty steep pace as well, shouldn’t help the electric bill.

enjoy your low gases prices… u people are funny…

I feel sorry for these guys. I also find it ironic how Americans complain about oil prices although they have the most fuel inefficient cars etc on the planet. We are going to have to change the whole infrastructure of countries soon as travelling will only get more expensive. I’m glad I can just walk to work!
