for a soccer player (striker) looking to develop game-like endurance, what would be a good work out for tempo days
2x10x80 5 min between sets
how much time between the 80m reps, and should I walk between or do something like situps/pushups
i do 2x7x200m with 45 sec/rep and 1min/set
If your ballskills are already pretty good, you might contemplate challenging them gently under the moderate fatigue accumulated during the tempo runs.
Do some ball juggling off the floor, or some very easy zig-zag manoeuvring through a sequence of cones, or both, and then, after a light calf and quad stretch return to the tempo runs.
YOu could think about doing something like that either between reps and/or between sets.
After a set of tempo runs, the challenge to your ball-control will start to become significant, approaching a game-situation which makes your GPP all the more relevant to your game objectives/needs. kk

spot on, I spent alot of time with womens soccer in oz as conditioner and we did alot of tempo running and very similar drills to those you mentioned and mixed in with the spatial awareness drills their presence on and off the ball improved greatly…
thanks Nanny,
One never knows whether ideas are accepted practice . . . I did something like that with a rugby team in late 1990/early 91, working upperbody plyometrics (variety of med ball passes) and lowerbody plyos (various skips, cone hops, and sprinting off the last cone for 10m and moving out as far as 60m.
For recovery they did easy walk/jog cut-out passing drills (three-man up to five-man weaves).
On the running days, we did modified 400 program and Olympic lifts three afternoons.
I only worked the off-season/pre-season with them and rehab’d their knee-reconstruction guys deepwater “running” in the pool.
They (panthers) won their first title anyway in 91, but they had some sensational players who were on tour and I only got to work with a couple of them, plus they had a brilliant thou ruthless coach.
I talked with a few of the guys from the pack late in 91 and they said they had continued to follow the same structure and ideas under the trainer who tookover from me.
I just didn’t like doing big numbers, or all the travelling from where I lived to where they trained more than an hour’s drive away. Plus we were expecting our first kid and I had to keep it cool on the homefront. kk
had the pleasure of working with the coach you speak of and also freddy at the peak of his powers at the roosters for 5-6 years where we kept it short and specific and had a great run from 2000 makin 4 gf’s and winning 1 but then taiwan and my own athletes took preference for me and after a few yrs there found myself getting sick of teaching people how to run and wasnt enjoying what i started this for developing my own athletes.
also good friends with many a player from that team great bunch of guys… also u remember a massage guy called brown??
but as you know many in league despite the professional era are a long ways behind when it comes to speed work i’m constantly amazed how many still doin loads of spd end work… and many do suffer from paralysis by analysis
gee you started late on the kids front or you just look like you had a hard life hahahaha wait thats what coaching on a budget will do for you i guess.
Nanny
budget? that’s money right? what budget?
