Dehydration and DOMS

Do any of you know whether there’s a direct correlation between dehydration during a workout and DOMS?

Malik

dehydration could be one factor that influences DOMS.

Since a protocol of drinking water and getting electrolytes is not complicated, it should not be a factor.

I agree, but what if you train dehydrated, and for some dumb reason don’t rehydrate properly after the fact . Besides all the other effects dehydration will have on your body, will DOMS be one of them.

Blood plasma volume and other signs of optimal hydration is key. While people will bash bodybuilders all the time for lame training, they eat with great dedication. Screw all of the cell volumization supplements if you don’t drink water (various secret herbal teas).

A recent reference of some relevance follows:

Proske U. and Allen J.T. (2005). Damage to Skeletal Muscle from Eccentric Exercise. Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews, 33 (2), 98-104

“Evidence is provided for a mechanical event as the first step in the process leading to muscle damage after a series of eccentric contractions. Aspects discussed include the decline in active tension, increase in passive tension, shift in length-tension relation, soreness, swelling and disturbed proprioception.”

For those of you interested in the subject…

There is and is. One aspect would be dehydration in general and the other the loss of fluid balance within the muscle cell into the surrounding tissue. DOMS is always worse when it occurs longer after the workout 9when you get sore the next day, that’s one thing. when you’re sore 3 days later- God help you- hope you don’t have any stairs to negotiate.

Thanks for all your feedback guys!

I now understand why I hurt for 2 days :). Lesson learned … drink before and after you run … duh :D.
