We normally do 100 meter race modeling before our speed workouts.
20-40-60-80 each focusing on the different phases of the 100.
Usually only the 20 and 40 are done at 95% then the rest are at around 85-90%.
I’d say it depends on the intensity of the buildups. If you are doing 70-100m buildups and building up to 95-100% then you are taxing the legs enough to count it in the total volume. As for counting ANY running toward the total volume, I am sure those counting warmup, ins, and outs, etc… allow for more total volume in daily workouts than those counting volume only pertaining to the actual workout.
From my understanding of volumes recommended by Charlie, Speed Volumes in CFTS look unattainably high for workouts, unless build-up runs etc. are factored in.
