Brown aiming at putting Canada back on sprint map!

You guys must be excited about this:

From IAAF site
Bressanone/Brixen, Italy – New Canadian 100m youth record holder Aaron Brown says he is very determine to put his country’s sprint back on the map.

Since Donovan Bailey, the 1996 Olympics 100m champion, at 9.84, and Bruny Surin, who also has a personal best of 9.84, in the 90s, Canada has not produced any world class sprinters.

However, Brown, who like Bailey and Surin, has roots in the Caribbean, is determined to change things.

During Wednesday’s afternoon sessions at the 6th IAAF World Youth Championships, Brown whose mother is from Barbados and father from Jamaica, ran 10.46 for a new Canadian youth record in the 100m second round.

He beat the previous mark of 10.51 set by Phillip Hayle last year.

“It means a lot to me,” he said while adding “it also means a lot for the country as my aim is to get the sprints back up on the map for Canada.”

“I am very determined to do it for my country,” he continued.

He said to win the gold medal on Thursday’s second day would be the start of that process.

“It would mean a lot for me to make my country proud, so I am very determined to get the gold,” added Brown.

In the first round, Brown led the qualifiers with 10.56secs, then returned 10.46 in the second round, again the fastest time going into today’s semi-finals.

Brown’s a really nice guy, known him for 2 years. Really hope he wins and gets into the 10.3 zone.

The american guy in the first semi (prezel hardy) turned it on a bit, 10.38.
Brown won his semi in 10.49

I’m also excited about this. Check out the reaction time!

Of course it is absolutely typical that the Canadian press will go after the kid BEFORE he’s done, heaping on the pressure, hoping to create news like they did at the Athens Olympics with Perdita. Why is no-one keeping these assholes away till AFTER the competition?
(What am I asking for? I already know the answer- the officials are just as ignorant of proper competition preparation as the press.)

Ya agreed.

Though im concerned he went out too hard in the 1st two rounds… but i guess we’ll know in a few minutes.

you enter the meet as an unranked kid with nothing to loose and the press turns it into a situation where you’re suddenly expected to win and anything less is a failure despite the fact that you’ve already clocked a PB, which is the most anyone can rasonably ask of an athlete at their first big meet. Any medal this kid gets is great and a big step up and someone should tell him and get the jerks off his back.

He just got a silver into a big headwind against the American who had more than a two tenth difference in PBs going in. Good for him!
And if the press are too stupid to appreciate his efforts despite their added pressure- well fuck em anyway!

lol ya, great job for him

He made good on it:
