KINGSTON, Feb 27, 2010 (AFP) - Usain Bolt, the world’s fastest man over the short sprints, produced an impressive 400m anchor leg but couldn’t deliver a victory in the 4x400m relay at Saturday’s Gibson Relays.

Bolt’s anchor split was 43.58 seconds. He brought the more than 15,000 spectators to their feet as he took the baton in fourth place, some 20m behind, and roared past all but the leader by the backstretch.

He challenged for the victory in the final 100m, but weakened toward the line as his team, Racer’s Lions, finished second in 3:05.77 behind University of Technology, who won in 3:05.33.

Earlier he anchored his team to a 4x100m relay victory in 38.08sec.

“We just came out here to have fun,” Bolt said. “It wasn’t about proving anything, it was about having fun.”

Yohan Blake, Marvin Anderson and Kenroy Anderson teamed with Bolt in the 4x100m team that finished ahead of a Racer’s B squad that featured Antigua’s Daniel Bailey.

UTech, including Anneisha McLaughlin and Christine Day, ran 3:36.21 to beat MVP (3:44.46) in the women’s 4x400m relay.

KINGSTON: World and Olympic triple gold medallist, Usain Bolt, produced a scintillating run, but his team Racers Lions was beaten by University of Technology (UTech) in the men’s 4×400m at Saturday’s Gibson Relays.

Bolt, on anchor, got the baton some 15-20 metres behind, but despite making up a lot of ground on the leaders, some of whom he passed, his 43.58 run was not enough as UTech held on for the victory in 3:05.33. Bolt took his team crossed the line in 3:05.77 ahead of Jermaine Gonzales-led Racers Track Club (3:06.55).

Earlier, after anchoring his team to 38.08 in the 4×100m, Bolt, who many included Michael Johnson believe can break the 400m world record of 43.19, held by Johnson himself, told journalists, “we just went out to have fun (in the 4×100m)…We (Racers Track Club) had two teams in the final, so it wasn’t about proving anything…It was about fun.”

“The real race would be in the 4×400m where sprinters will square off with quarter-milers,” Bolt, who holds the 100m and 200m world records at 9.58 and 19.19.

Team Bickle USA stole the show in the High School section. They first won the 4×800m in a record 8:41.92 ahead of Edwin Allen (8:51.57) and returned to close the show by taking the 4×400m in 3:37.23 ahead of Manchester High (3:39.91).

Vere Technical, the High school of Merlene Ottey, won the boys’ 4×400m in 3:14.29 while Holmwood took the 4×800m in 7:45.55.

He slowed down at the very end of the 4x400m, but considering how tired he was anyway, I doubt it cost him that much time.
