Who do you guys think has the best and worst sprinting form?
My vote(s) for best go to Mo Greene and Matt Bruno (advantageathletics has a pic of his form). They both seem to have everything in place.
Two of the worst forms, in my opinion, belong to JJ Johnson and Tim Montgomery. JJ and Tim almost Tippy-Toe throughout the whole sprint. JJ kind of curls up like a ball when he runs, it seems like, and Tim looks like he is running on hot coals as he is getting no knee drive or real heel recovery.
I’m not bashing anyone, just wondering. BTW, this discussion is based on the athlete’s form relative to “prototypical” form. You know, the “perfect” form (which I don’t know if anyone has).
This site once had an animated gif showing Montgomery and Chambers from Paris last year. They were shown from the side in slow-motion. Suffice to say that gif shows Montgomery in great form - you dont run 9.78 without proper knee-drive! It seems every runner with great cadence gets accused of not having proper form - Ben Johnson ,Tim Montgomery ,Kim Collins - this is a trick of the eye.
at the moment kim collins has sound form apart from the head bobbing.hes well co-ordinated and all the basic factors are in place and a very good model to work from.the worst form of the moment has to be deji alieu, hes raw and always seems to be tight althought very effective
When Matt Bruno runs his arms swing WAY side to side. I know because when i was a freshman he was a senior and i would always see him at the invites. (our highschools were VERY close to each other) But dont get me wrong he is fast, running a wind-aided 10.33 at league championships. but his freshman year at ucla wasnt good at all with him coming out with a best of 10.66. I heard some coaches talking and they said it was because he couldnt use enhancements in college because they test for it.
I didn’t know his arms swung way side to side. That’s freaky. His UCLA career has blown so far, but if he was dumb enough to use enhancements he deserves it. Dumb ass.
Using enhancements is what got him what it did. Now we know his real potential…jack squat. He should probably find something to help him, find an excellent coach (Charlie? ) or just give it up, because he’s done now.
If they are illegal in college, then you should probably think more along the lines of anabolic steroids and things of that nature. It’s not like the guy was small, he was actually quite big. I think this is the link to the pic of him…
Yea there was NO reason for him to use enhancements. they made him peak n high school and now i dont think hell ever be able to reach his “true” potential.
X-Man, you think Kim Collins has good form. I can’t see it. I think his form is terrible.
When in form, Greene is one of the best. Christian Malcom looks good sometimes.
I recently fell in love with Christine Arron’s form. I never really paid attention to it before, but once she gets up and running she has some nice form. Thats part of the reason why she has such a great 2nd half in the 100m.
400stud, I think Tim’s form is better than JJ. Tim just doesn’t seem to be aggressive enough with his arms. JJ does need to open up a little. I think he has the mentality that you have to move everything quick in a short range. Instead of tryin to do it in the full range of motion.
Treble yes i honestly admire KC’s form.video-tape him then slow it down and you’ll see what i’m talking about.his down-fall in the WC’s was tightness and if he wants to progress further he will have to relax more in the finals.his whole form in that final was bad but he did the job.
his head bobbing can be adjusted and also he can be inclined to sit back at times rather than staying tall.but when running well he is very sound, just slow him down and look for yourself!!!
Treble, I completely agree, Christian Malcolm does have great form. I have had the joy of being able to watch him train, and for a short guy christ his stride’s long! He can’t be much taller than 5’8/5’9 but his running is effortless. Having watched him run from side on, his form comes from having his hips high (bit like Arron), thus enabling his knee drive to be so much more energy efficient.
another british athlete to study is marlon devonish.he not as refined as CM but he is smooth.both athletes are very sound mechanically but the training and training methods they use can let them down at times which will play vital roles in both advancing in the majors
There is some truth in that x, but i feel that maybe they haven’t got a winning mentality like greene had a few years ago. You can do all the training in the world and if ur head’s not in it then what’s the point???
