Athletes/alcohol Poll?

VG,
People are still stuck on “My way is the right way”

Thank you VG.

I’m not alone :stuck_out_tongue:

I had never tried alcohol until I was 23, prior to that I always had heaps of fun without being drunk at uni parties.

I dont mind to drink but I dont think its necessary to drink or not drink.

If you do things in moderation you will be fine!

I havent drunk any alcohol the last few weeks through trying to eat well and funnily enough I have had my best gains in loosing fat.

I think its not so much due to not drinking but due to being responsible about everything I consumed, with the flow over effect being I am more focused on training, eating sleeping and sure enough my PB’s are increasing…

so for now I am staying away from alcohol, and the longer I stay away I know it will mean the less I have to spend when I want to have a night out, which is a good thing as I need money for more protein powder

we are humans, not robots…in the end we have to live life as well…if u got a debilitating injury that didnt allow you to ever run again, you would probably end up thinking “damn, why didnt i live life a little bit more when i was training?” and NO im NOT saying get trashed, its like DMA said, a bottle of wine with lunch is hardly a terrible thing.

ben johnson had a beer once a week, and charlie said the effects were negligable. would you call him unfocussed?

He also had one of the greatest coaches of all time on his side so it didn’t matter.

I doubt Ben ever needed to decrease his bodyfat from 12% to an acceptable level so why would he need to bother about restricting his alcohol intake?

My point is that each person has different goals they are trying to reach, when I am sub 6% and running alot faster then I will have the occasional beer too, but I am restricting myself until then to give myself the best possible chance of reaching my target bodyweight and fat levels, and hopefully in conjuction with speed and strength goals.

There will be plenty of time to drink at the after party for nationals

Even if I dont obtain my goal in the 100m I will look better at 5% then I would at 12% :stuck_out_tongue:

Ah - yes - but Ben was drinking Guiness - and that has medicinal properties and secret ingredients.

It is the combination: drinking and party I am against…
I’m not against controlled use of beer and whine, used for better performance or better health.

DWatling… You say that to drink is to live life more? That’s stupid… Intelligent people know that they can have EXTREMELY much fun, and live life, without drinking. If you wanna get to the top, you have to risk some social life (parties etc) on the way… Depends on how much you want to be a top athlete.

And - you drink now, because you may be injuried in the future, and then you will regret that you didn’t drink? How serious are you? You have to take some chances…

Sorry if I’m misunderstanding anything in your post DWatling…

Facts:

  1. Drinking and drunkeness are two completly different things.
  2. Alcohol is a drug

We can’t forget this.
It can cause untold suffering to people and families.

It can encourage relaxation and good feelings, but personally I’m not sure the benefits outway the downsides.

So long as alcohol is used in moderation it’s cool - when people start to abuse it, problems occur.

I agree with VG, anyone can have a good time without alcohol, it is not true to suggest that only those who drink can have fun or enjoy themselves.

Weigh it up guys but never forget the facts.

VG, i NEVER stated drinking was to live life. i was speaking in general terms, not in reference to alcohol.
and when i talk about regretting not living life more, im not reffering to drinking either. just talking about life…i think im getting away from the alcohol topic, turning more philosophical

for the record.

i never ever drink either

If you change the “D” in DWatling’s name to “T” his name becomes Twatling.

Hahahahahhahahaha. Twatling.

A mini twat. Tee hee!

Have you been drinking  ?

DWatling - Who’s that in your avatar?

can someone explain briefly to me exactly why alcohol is so bad in training… i don’t really understand the reasons

two reasons…

impairs protein repair,

and the metabolic system focuses on the ethonal instead of restoration functions. Plus the beer goggles can turn you into shallow hal.

Related to training, alcohol decreases testosterone production (although not in great amounts) therefore hindering protein synthesis, converts to fat before it can be metabolised, can lead to decreased bone density, and hangovers can kill performance. Small or large intake of alcohol post training increases platelet aggregation which increases risk of heart attack. This is the opposite of at other times when a small amount of alcohol decreases platelet aggregation which is one of the reasons it is said to be beneficial to health in small amounts (large amounts at any time can increase platelet aggregation). Other beneficial effects are psychological and in the case of red wine, antioxidants.

this may be a stupid question :o but does the testosterone issue matter so much for a girl? or is it all the same in the context of protein synthesis>

is the platelet issue in any way related to caffeine as well? i remember a dancer in san francisco who performed strenuously for 2 hours, had coffee right after and had a heart attack and died… maybe this was just the obvious perking effect of caffeine…

Chris McLaughlin, you obviously didnt read Ruperts post about being nice to other people on this forum :frowning:

The girl in my avatar is an american import model named chrirtine mendoza. you can find more pictures of her at www.cmendoza.com

and yes she is all real

Is she an “actress” or a “model”?

She’s beautiful none the less.

haha she’s a ‘model.’ strictly legit.

thats as nekkid as she gets, right there.

Just checking. Looks a bit scandolous to me. I love it
