Jamaica’s Asafa Powell, the former world 100-metre record holder, competed in his specialty at the Trinidad and Tobago national championships Saturday, winning his semifinal race in 9.96 seconds.
Second place went to Trinidad’s Richard Thompson, who recorded a time of 10.11 seconds, just enough to qualify for the final. Earlier this season, Thompson ran 9.93 seconds in Auburn, Ala.
Because the meet served as that country’s Olympic trials, Powell was not permitted to run in the final.
It was mission accomplished nonetheless.
Powell, 25, has been nursing a pulled muscle in his chest suffered in a training session and has been unable to race. While he was recovering, he watched as his world record of 9.74 seconds was beaten by fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt.
“He got out of the blocks fine,” said Powell’s American manager, Paul Doyle. "He was a little timid because he was not sure how his chest would be. It was a fine start although he didn’t have his usual explosiveness.
“After the race he had his normal massage, rub down and went over the race with his coach. He was very calm, very relaxed. He knows he was a little bit timid coming out of the blocks. I think that gave him the confidence he needs going into the Jamaican trials next week.”
Doyle said Powell ate dinner at the stadium then watched the final before heading back to the hotel for an early night.
Next week he will face a major test at the Jamaican Olympic trials where he will line up against Usain Bolt in the 100 metres.
“Quite honestly he is going to have to race Usain,” said Doyle. “But both guys don’t want to challenge each other. It’s not worth racing each other at max at this stage of the season. They don’t want to beat each other up at the trials. I think they will both be running relaxed and do what they need to make the team.”
Doyle predicted his athlete will regain the 100-metre world record some time this summer.
“He has had a long break without competitions so he is going to want to run a lot of races to get sharp but still be fresh at the Olympic games,” he said.
“We could see three guys in the 9.7’s at the Olympics. It’s going to be an interesting summer.” no, it’s gonna be a real hot summer -mortac8
