Andrea's Training Journal!

Bahh…I’m a slacker…and I’m being retarted lately…I need to smarten up. That’s all I have to say for now.

Andrea, you are not allowed to workout or do any sort of therapy for 3 weeks! Now sit around and do nothing all day. That is an order!!!

If only it were that easy to trick me into acctually doing something productive…
Thanks for the effort though!

I have some confessions to make… :o

The last week I’ve been being stupid as I said, hardly eating anything, not sleeping at all, drinking too much alcohol and not NEARLY enough water. Haven’t done David Lee Pong, Apple Pie, dribbling or ankle exercises in over a week! Here’s a quick rundown…

Monday, July 10, 2006
Started summer school today. Elevator was broken so had to go up 3 flights of stairs and slide back down on my butt. Got about 5 hours of sleep the night before.

Tuesday, July 11, 2006
Went swimming in the morning.
Got about 4 hours of sleep the night before.
Physio Appointment #9
The usual stuff, played around with both ankles. Had to tape my right one to prevent some pinching that’s been bothering me when I’m getting up and down. 10 minutes on the bike, 3 X 10 calf raises (right foot only) and then a few minutes on the wobble board.

Wednesday, July 12, 2006
Went to the beach, did a fair bit of swimming.
Got about 4 hours of sleep the night before.
Got drunk. I was extra careful cause drunk on crutches is like more dangerous than drunk driving but nothing happened, all went well. Didn’t drink enough water or eat enough.

Thursday, July 13, 2006
Got about 3 hours of sleep last night. Got up and went to school. Another 3 flights of stairs since Bill told me I’m not even ALLOWED to take the elevator! Played a little bit of wheelchair basketball in the gym, felt good to have a ball in my hands even though it was a pathetic display. Shane wasn’t a very good baby sitter and I took a good little spill, nice bruise on my hip. Haha…sorry bud.
The only thing I had to eat all day was a cookie, until we went out for wings at about 8:00…got drunk again. With the lack of food it really hit me hard…again didn’t drink nearly enough water.

Friday, July 14, 2006
Went swimming. After about 2 hours of sleep! :o
Physio Appointment #10
Played with the ankles and right foot, he adjusted my ankle bones in the right foot to try and fix the pinching, worked pretty well, I’m sposed to start taping it as much as possible now. Did some manipulation for the first time with my left ankle. Immediately there was soooo much more movement but then after about 10 minutes when he went back to it, it was tightened right up again.
Worked with my back a little, a few manipulation exercises, I would cross my arms and he’d pick me up off the table and kind of flick in various positions. Then he decided to put me on the traction machine at a really low intensity and without strapping my upper body to the table. Felt awesome at the time but my back got even more sore than usual later in the day. Didn’t feel like doing the gym work today, way too tired.

Went to the beach after wards. No swimming, just floating. Still good though. Vitamin D synthesis!
Shane thought I didn’t eat enough today…BUT compared to the rest of the week I thought I was doing great!
Slept in til 1 the next day so I got a good 11 hours of sleep…just what my body needed.

Comments
I think the whole lack of eating thing is mostly just horomones or something, because I don’t even feel an urge for food or anything, I’m just never hungry and don’t feel like forcing it down. I don’t think I’ve lost anymore weight. At the begining of the week I was at 122lbs I believe (which is about 10 less than before the accident, but I lost that right away so it’s not because of this week). So I’ll check again later and see what I’m at now.
It has NOTHING to do with me thinking I’m fat or anything girly and stupid like that…body just doesn’t want food lately. I’ve been through cycles like this before where I’m not hungry, just never to this extent or for this long. If it keeps up for much longer I’ll consider dropping in to see the doctor. Otherwise I don’t feel hungry or unhealthy so why should I worry right?
I’ll start sleeping more from now on. I had company the past week and we were just always up late hanging out, so that problem should just fix itself now.
There’s really no excuse for the lack of water…I guess the alcohol should be avoided though…I need to either make a decision to quit cold turkey…AGAIN…or just keep doin what I’m doin. I know it’s not a good idea but I’m liking it at the moment.
I think it’s a combination of all of the above but I’ve got a bit of depression happening at the moment. It was only a matter of time living like I have been before that would set in though.
I also haven’t been taking my vitamins lately so that could be a big factor as well. I got back on track today though.

So that’s the update of my LACK of training journal.

Andrea’s new sport is drinking guys under the table.

Yeah, and she’d blow me outa the water

David Lee Pong
Took a week off after hitting 35 so decided to go back down to 30 for another week!
3 X [(30 X Hyperextensions) + (30 X Pushups)]

Physio Appointment #11

Worked with my right foot a fair bit. Trying to adjust the ankle bones to prevent the pinching, did a few squats while he held my ankle in various positions.
Left ankle - He was VERY impressed with how well the movement is coming along. I would almost go as far as to say AMAZED. He was mostly referring to the side to side motion. When he gets excited…I get encouraged. So I felt pretty good.

Hooked EMS up to my left quad and also the tibialis anterior. They were both firing in unison and I had to resist it by lifting my leg and dorsiflexing at the same time, then slowly relaxing.

Into the gym…
10 minutes on the bike. Then using a big elastic band attached to the wall worked on building up the strength in my left leg and knee. Working against the resistance in all directions. Was pretty sore the next day acctually.
Then did some balancing exercises (standing on right foot) on the wobble board. The first one was too easy so I had to upgrade to a balloony type one and just try and stand there without falling…then progressing into onle legged squats. There was a bar close at hand which I had to use frequently! :stuck_out_tongue:

Wednesday July 19, 2006

Swimming this morning. Too tired for David Lee Pong. Warmed up in the hot tub for about 10 minutes. Then did about 3 or 4 full laps of doggy paddeling, little bit of breast stroke. TINY bit of walking…and A LOT of standing around talking. The diving sharks have some new recruits and a new srsenal of weapons so we had to be extra cautious today. Savages.

Started the day off with what should have been a nice relaxing swim. Being Thursday and the slowest pool day of the week. However my swimming partner, being new and just learning the ropes didn’t heed my warnings about the diving sharks and was led astray and lured into the dark side. He even took part in their deadly bottom feeding action. The swim was clearly all down hill from there. You just can’t truly trust someone who’s been over to the dark side.

3rd Check up with Surgeon[ul]
[li]Got the Xrays done (will be posted below)
[/li][li]Begin with 30% weight bearing left ankle - progressively adding more weight until FULL weight bearing with a CANE (I’ll be such a pimp) in the next 3-4 weeks
[/li][li]Get rid of the back brace completely - starting with 4 hours a day, increasing by 2 hours each week, however, little does he know I already wear the brace much less than that…so I should move along quite quickly!
[/li][/ul]

Tried to pry some information out of him about the screw removal surgery. Said it will be any time from 6 months to a year, Bill told me the sooner the better so I’m going to hope for November…we’ll see what happens! I’ll talk to Bill about it a bit more detailed tommorrow!

Ya that’s about it…it’s gonna take a while to get these pictures up and running so I’ll leave it at that.

So I scooted around the hospital and asked about 10 different people how I could get ahold of a CD with all my Xrays on it…finally tracked them down…they’re sposed to be super confidential and the CD says right on there to store them in a safe place or destroy them. But the way I figure…they’re pictures of MY body…so I’ll do whatever I like with them!

Ahhhh the ankle. Now you may be wondering what those dents are in my leg…not to worry though “Those are just holes I tried to drill into but changed my mind.” Says the surgeon

Sorry these are so huge!

These ones were taken standing up, with my brace on and off. I’ll just show the ones with the brace off because all the metal in the others gets really screwy hard to see.

From the side…

Now I’m no doctor, but I believe that funny shaped object in the middle there is my belly button ring…whoops! And the other weird little thing by my pelvis is the bottom of my zipper. I did a good job of removing all my metal today hey?

And the last cool thing I have for the day. On the CD the receptionist gave me I asked for ALL the Xrays…but I guess after they’ve been used they replace the actual Xray with the doctor’s analysis. So here they are…

May 17, 2006 (Day of the accident)

CERVICAL SPINE

Mineralization and alignment of the spine are within normal limits.
The intervertebral disc spaces are well maintained. No bony abnormality is identified.

LUMBAR SPINE

The lumbar vertebral bodies maintain normal alignment. Mainly displaced avulsion fractures involve the anterior margins of the superior endplates of T-12 through L-2 with slight anterior wedging deformities of the superior endplates at these levels. The L-3 through L-5 vertebral bodies are preserved. Intervertebral disc spacing is maintained.

LEFT ANKLE

A single AP view of the left ankle has been obtained through plaster and demonstrates a fracture through the medial malleolus with displacement of the fragments on the order of 10 mms. I suspect a fracture involving the distal fibula as well however, this is not well visualized in the AP plane. The ankle mortise appears symmetrical. Further evaluation with computer tomography would be of benefit to better assess this complex fracture.

BILATERAL FEET

The AP and oblique views of the left foot have been obtained through a fiberglas cast. A single limited AP view of the right foot has been obtained out of cast. Comminuted fractures involve the left medial and lateral malleoli. No obvious fracture or dislocation is seen to involve the right or left foot on these limited views.

BILATERAL CALCANEUS

No fracture or dislocation is identified.

CT CHEST, ABDOMEN AND PELVIS - CONTRAST ENHANCED:

Multiple axial contrast-enhanced sections have been obtained from lung apices through to the symphysis pubis.

The lungs are well expanded and clear with no evidence for pulmonary contusion, pleural effusion or pneumothorax. The thoracic aorta, pulmonary arteries and great vessels appear intact with no evidence for mediastinal hemorrhage. No obvious rib or sternal fracture is seen.

The liver, gallbladder and bile ducts are normal. The pancreas, spleen, adrenal glands and both kidneys are normal. The abdominal aorta appears normal. The bladder is collapsed around an indwelling Foley catheter. No evidence for abdominal or pelvic free fluid or free air. The pelvis appears intact. Incidental note is made of mild compression fractures involving some of the upper lumbar vertebral bodies. This will be further assessed with dedicated lumbar images.

IMPRESSION: Compression fractures are present throughout the lumbar vertebral bodies and will be further assessed with dedicated imaging of this region. No further trauma is identified within the chest, abdomen or pelvis.

(Well overall that summary was pretty positive! Kinda makes me feel good about myself!)

CT THORACOLUMBAR SPINE - NONCONTRAST:

Data obtained from the recent CT study of the chest, abdomen and pelvis has been reformatted for further assessment of the lower spine from T11 through S1. Coronal and sagittal reformatting has been performed.

Mild compression fractures involve the superior end plates of T12 through L3 resulting in mild multilevel anterior wedging defects.
This results in approximately 25% loss of vertebral body height anteriorly at T12 with 20% loss of vertebral body height anteriorly at
L1 an L2. There is less than 10% loss of vertebral body height anteriorly at L3.
No evidence for retropulsion of bone fragments into
the spinal canal. The pedicles and posterior elements remain intact at all involved levels.

The remainder of the lumbar spine appears unremarkable apart from mild

(Yet somehow I’m still convinced I’m going to be taller after this!)

April 1, 2006

LEFT ANKLE:

Five screws are present in the distal tibial metaphysis and medial malleolus from repair of previous intraarticular fracture. The fracture line is faintly discernible with excellent position
maintained.

April 22, 2006

THORACIC AND LUMBAR SPINE

Views of the lower thoracic and entire lumbar spine have been obtained. Anterior compression fractures are present in the bodies of T-12, L-1, L-2 and L-3 with 10 to 20 percent of anterior loss of height of each vertebral body. Vertebral alignment is not significantly altered. Fracture lines are now well defined consistent
with development of healing callus

LEFT ANKLE

The previously demonstrated fracture of the distal tibial metaphysis and medial malleolus has been immobilized with five cannulated screws. There is less than 1 mm distraction of the fracture fragments. The fracture line is barely discernible. (That sounds like a good thing?)

Lots of core today. Can’t explain what motivated me to that but it works for me!

David Lee Pong
3 X [(30 X hyperextensions) + (30 X pushups)]

THENN…did my core stablizing drills for the first time in like 2 weeks. 5 X 20 (10 each leg) with 10 pushups in between each set.

ANDDD…just did another 2 X [(30 x Pushups) + (30 X hyperextensions)]

OKKK…so that’s a total of…450

Physio Appointment #12

So Bill was pretty stoked to be able to start really getting agressive today. I wasn’t QUITE as excited.
We had a really encouraging start today…he examined my back a little bit, just visually from the side with my shirt rolled up…and his comments were…
“You are so lucky girl. If you came in here complaining of a back problem, and I looked at you, there is NO WAY I would ever guess that you have 4 fractured and compressed vertebrae in there. Normally there are swollen bits and flat bits but you look completely normal!”
Soooo I was pretty excited to hear all that. Then we moved on to the ankle. He went and got a scale so that we could measure how it feels to weight bear 30%…it was acctually a lot MORE than I thought it would be. Alll this tiem I thought I was doing too much but apparently not. Anyways, he had me put my left foot on the scale and squat and drive me knee forward, although to the naked eye you could barely even tell my leg was moving at all! haha And he was manipulating my ankle and pushing it in all different positions trying to adjust it to decrease the pain a bit! So ya…PAINFUL!!!
Moved on to a little bit of the normal stuff. Some manipulation of both ankles and just working on ROM. Not for very long though. Then made my way into the gym. 10 minutes on the bike (level 10). Then a bunch of resistance arm exercise things on a swiss ball. All different kinds of pulling movements using big stretchy bands attached to the wall, while sitting the swiss. (3 sets of 10 for each exercise) Then I did a few minutes balancing on the wobble board (right foot) and finished with some resistance leg exercises (3 X 10) left leg only.

That’s all!

Today was so close to training it hurt!

David Lee Pong
3 X [(35 X Hyperextensions) + (35 X pushups)]
That’s right…FINALLY made it 35…after 3 weeks of hanging around 30! haha…they were a piece of cake this time though!

Warm up
15 minutes on the bike
Lots of stretching (pretty much the first time since the accident, however most of the stretches I can only do on one side, so it’s a little weird, felt good none the less)

Apple Pie
3 X 12 Tricep Pull downs (30lbs I think)
3 X 12 Bench Press (Whatever the bar is…25lbs ish??)
3 X 12 some leg machine, uhhh worked the quads whatever it was (level 5…whatever that is)
1 X 12 leg swing exercises using some crazy machine for resistance rather than elastics. forwards, backwards and outwards - Left leg only

Core
Several sets of back extension drills
2 X 15 seconds of pushing the ball outwards
1 X 5 times each way, rotating the ball around my head
1 X 30 seconds normal back extensions

This was MORE than enough…back was EXHAUSTED after each set!

Warm down
10 minutes on the bike!

ENDORPHINS FEEL SOOOOOO GOOD…I can’t believe I’ve gone this long without them!

Anyways…all the training is finally going to pay off, headed to the coast tommorrow to swim in the ocean! Can’t wait!

uuhhhh, 45lbs!!! duh!

woooahhh…even better…look at me go! Machine or what!?

wholly crap!!! Andrea you are a machine.

uuhhhhh, duh!

I’ll do my best to remember some of this stuff, it’s been a while though.

Physio Appointment #13

Started off with 10 minutes on the bike while Bill looked at my Xrays and stuff. Then he came in and sounding a little shocked told me that I had some other crazy fracture that no one told me about where a big chunk of one of the vertebrae came right off or something. Sounded pretty cool. Now he’s even more impressed with how unbelievably well my back is doing.
Worked with both the feet for a while. He had me stand up and put my left foot on an inclined block of wood and try and drive my knee forward and squat. Pretty much didn’t work even a little bit! haha…couldn’t even bend my knee AT ALL at first but as he adjusted stuff I started to get a tiny bit of motion. The lack of motion was due to an INSANE tightness in my heel cord so he said that it was okay to push myself through that and just ignore the pain so I did…tried anyways, the pain was a bit much to just “ignore”.
Anyways…did some other stuff in the gym. Working on balance, standing on the wobble boards and pulling on resistance bands and what not and then did some resistance stuff with the bands on my left leg. 3 X 12 going every direction.

Drove to Vancouver…Did a whole bunch of EMS on the way. First on my calf, and resisting it. Then on my Quad and anterior compartment, also trying to resist it. Then I was the guinea pig trying it on my abs…prettttty intense. Was definitly sore for a good hour afterwards but fine the next day.

Went for a swim in the OCEAN when we got there. Shane’s very first time. The training definitly paid off. Until I mentioned the word SHARK when we were Half way out to the floating dock. I’ve never seen a kid swim so fast! Haha
Ate pretty well, definitly didn’t drink enough water and got a bit drunk.

Wednesday July 26, 2006

About 6 hours sleep!
Ahhhh…no David Lee Pong…did a lot of trotting around town on the crutches. Went to a different beach today, the tide was out and it was a really shallow beach and since we weren’t allowed to take the floaties in the water I only made it out as far as waste deep.
Ate pretty good food today though, definitly not enough water. When I was in the apartment I just WALKED everywhere I went cause the walls are so close it’s always something to hold on to. Apparently the ankle wasn’t lovin it and got REALLY swollen. Got drunk again tonight, that really doesn’t help with the dehydration.

Thursday July 27, 2006

About 4 hours sleep!
Can’t even believe how much walking I did today. Spent a good 4 hours walking up and down 4th Ave. with only 2 sitting breaks in between. Felt like I just ran 8 marathons by the time that was done. After a calf massage and some REALLY good supper I was feeling a fair bit better and surprise surprise got drunk again. Went to some club and had lots of fun, you wouldn’t even believe the number of girls that met Shane Marrs that night! Annnd my pick up line of how I saved a box of 15 kittens from a runaway school bus with 75 children on it was definitly HIGHLY EFFECTIVE. Remember that one the next time you’re at the club on crutches! Buttt you also need to remember that since you’ll probably be sitting on the VIP couch for most of the night it’s going to be REALLY hard to keep track of how many drinks you’ve been having since you can’t get to the bar yourself, there is a pretty much steady stream of free drinks with no breaks in between. Watch out for that.

Friday July 28th, 2006

About 3 hours sleep!
Packed up and drove home, finally caught up on a good night’s rest! About 11 hours of sleep!!!

Again another update of my lack of training…although I have been very active the last week and my hands and feet are definitly feeling it from all the crutching around town. My ankle and finally resumed a normal size and I’m going to take it easy this weekend for sure.

EXCUSE ME! YOU only made it out waste deep? the truth to this fictional story is that I piggy-backed her out there, in the ocean mud, where i sank to my shins every step, about 200m. probably the best workout for my glutes though.

Went to some club and had lots of fun, you wouldn’t even believe the number of girls that met Shane Marrs that night!
yeah, im ganna count, but it musta been at least 20.

Again another update of my lack of training…
yeah, same here, time to get back into the grove.

David Lee Pong
3 X [(35 X Backextensions) + (35 X Pushups)]
This is getting easier everyday!

Physio Appointment #14

10 minutes on the bike. At first my ankle was REALLY hurting, I wasn’t sure if I was gonna be able to finish or not, felt like a really painful needing to pop or something but I kept going and it felt fine after a while. Felt overly energetic and decided to set the resistance pretty high and get a decent workout. I was definitly pooped by the end of it. Felt really good though.
3 X 10 Calf Raises
Some balancing on the wobble board
then some balancing/pully resistance stuff on the bosu ball thingy with some squatting and twisting etc.
Bill caught me walking around…got a little mad at first…but then we discussed it and he was all for it. Just said that I’m ahead of schedual and good for me!
He did the usual playing around with both ankles. It had an overly sensitive movement that he didn’t really touch on for some reason, can’t remember why.
He did a little analysis of my muscle definition…I’ve lost TONNES from my calf, quad and ham, but contrary to popular belief, not a whole lot from my glutes! haha
Hooked me up to the EMS on my quad and put a ball between my knees. When it contracted I had to squeeze the ball and squat and slowly come back up. Did that for 10 minutes.

Since I sort of got the go ahead from Bill I’ve been walking around a fair bit today. The ankle is pretty swollen now but I’ve iced it and will do it again. It’s normal.

Couldn’t decide what to do with my new found hour before bed so went crazy with the abs??

3 X [10 X Stabalizing (each leg) + 60 X Herbs & Spices + 10 X pushups]

Don’t even ask me where that came from…maybe it’s cause I have no muscle left in my legs so they only weigh half as much…but there’s NO WAY I could have done 3 X 60 H&S before! Even when I was training. And I wasn’t even struggling to finish them at the end…Can someone explain what’s going on here?!?!

So ya that was a total of 480 abs!! But since I’m Obsessive Compulsive I can’t leave it at a number like 480 so I just did 20 more to make it an even 500
