Andrea's Training Journal!

GP Appointment #1

I wasn’t very excited about this appointment. Bill told me to go in and see the GP about the stitches that are popping out of the incisions because one of them isn’t healing up very well and I can’t start swimming until it does, but he wasn’t sure if they were dissolvable or if I had to pull them out myself!
Not a very important question that I had to ask him, and since it was my first visit since the accident I figured I would have to go through the WHOLE story and it would take forever. He was pretty good about it though, just looked at my file, and said “Well Andrea, I’m sure you’ve been lectured enough…you don’t need my 2 cents” Haha, that was a relief. Anyways, he told me that the stitches are dissolvable, they’re just used to hold the deeper tissue layers together and sometimes the ends of them poke out through the surface but it won’t be a problem. I need to wear a bandage on the one side until it heals a bit better but as long as they look good by next Thursday (5 week check up with the surgeon) I’m good to go!

Check ups with the surgeon are so nerve racking! It’s like an audition or a try-out, all the physio and recovery that you do throughout the weeks is all leading up to those appointments, you MUST impress the surgeon with you’re fast recovery so he’ll let you progress (get in the pool sooner, get walking sooner) It’s ALL based on those check ups! :o

Physio Appointment #3

Began with some work on my right foot since it has really been bothering me this past week, somedays to the point where I can hardly put enough weight on it to get out of bed. He did a lot of examining it, moving stuff around, pushing on stuff, there wasn’t very much pain and he said for right now it’s just gonna be a guess that it’s soft tissue damage, he didn’t notice any bone trauma but said it’s VERY possible that I might have small, unnoticed breaks in there. Even so there’s not much we could do about that except wait for it to heal anyways.
Did about 5-10 minutes of ultrasound on the top of my right foot using Voltaren Gel as the conductor. He said that it’s safe for me to use the Voltaren as an anti-inflam.
When he got to the left ankle he said that it’s really starting to tighten up so I need to be more agressive when I’m working it. Start using a strap to pull it towards myself and loosen it up a bit, but also said that this is the most tight that it’s ever gonna be and I don’t need to worry about it getting any worse than it is now. He did a bit of manipulation with it and worked on the range of motion quite a bit. Much more agressively than before…PAIN!!!
When he was done yanking on it, he got me to sit up while he flopped my foot back and forth and to and fro and said that’s a REALLY GOOD SIGN because if there were still any cracked pieces of bone then I would be cringing in pain every time he moved it. So that means it’s healing really well.
We didn’t do anything with my back today, but he mentioned that I’m allowed to start doing some stabalizing exercises while I’m lying down. Flex my core with one leg bent and use my core to lift the other leg off the bed, we’ll progress from there as I get my strength back.
Lastly, he put a heating pad under my calf and hooked my calf up to the EMS. I had a strap on my foot and whenever the EMS was firing I had to pull on the strap and dorsiflex my foot, this is to counteract the EMS I believe. Then I would relax when it relaxed. I think it was set to about 15 second intervals and I did this for 15 minutes. He did a little bit more movement with it and my ankle felt GREAT afterwards.
I’m allowed to do this as much as possible, and his comments on using EMS were “Use it for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING” So Herb, I’m gonna be fighting you for playtime with your new toy!

-2 minutes break in //

Drove for my first time today!! It was really awkward at first, I guess that’s kind of normal after a month of lying in bed though. For the first 5 or 10 minutes I felt like my reflexes and reaction time were not nearly good enough to be driving and it was a little nerve racking because I wasn’t sure how I would react to a bad situation but I got over that pretty quickly and was soon feeling comfortable with it! Bill said that knowing that I’m able to drive will help a lot mentally, I’ll feel more liberated knowing that I can hop in the car and take off whenever I want. But I still don’t think I’m going to be doing much driving, it’s too much of a risk right now, I wear my back brace, but if I ever got in an accident, even a small fender bender or having to slam on my brakes or anything would hurt my back SO much. So I’ll keep it to a minimum!

About 15 minutes into the physio session today Bill said “I’m gonna make a bold statement right now…you’ll definitly be playing basketball again! When I first heard about the accident I thought you were a write off, but I take that back. It’ll be a long, HARD road but you can do it.”
Meanwhile I was thinking to myself, ‘There was never any doubt in my mind that I would play again’ :stuck_out_tongue:

You are the one telling me that you have all this money! They are $119.00 at London Drugs. BUT, save your money and ask Bill to sell you one of his old ones with more variability than the silly TENS unit that I got.

Just felt a random spurt of energy and thought I would do a bit of working out.

Apple Pie Workout
Bicep Curls and Shoulder raises - 3 X 10
Tricep Extensions - 3 X 20

Note: It’s been WAY too long since my last apple pie…need to keep up with that more!

15 minute dribbling session. There aren’t many moves that I can practice in a wheelchair, but I know it can’t hurt to have a ball in my hands as much as possible, so I did some basic push-pulls, and a few in-and-outs. The dribbling is good to get my heart rate up a little bit, which doesn’t happen very often so I’ll try and do that a bit more often to.

Here’s a list of goals for the week (Monday - Saturday) to keep me motivated.

  1. David Lee Pong (back extensions) every morning
  2. Apple Pie Workout - 4 days
  3. Dribbling (at least 10 minute session) - 5 days
  4. MINIMUM of 15 minutes of ice on left ankle - EVERY DAY!
  5. Eat REALLY HEALTHY - 4 days

I did another 15 minute session of heating my calf and pulling my left foot (with a strap) towards me. By the end of the 15 minutes my ankle was absolutely SPENT, I didn’t even have the strength to maintain the dorsiflexion while I was lying there so I had to just put my cast back on and relax. I think that should be my aim everytime I exercise it from now on, it might save me a lot of pain at my physio appointments! :stuck_out_tongue:

Just remembered that as we were leaving physio today Bill told my mom that I’m “improving by leaps and bounds” That made me pretty excited!

Anyways, I’m trying to get my Circadian Rhythm back to a normal schedual, ie. NOT 2AM, so I’m going to bed an hour earlier each night, it’s working so far, aiming for 11 tonight!

Started off the morning with a good David Lee Pong workout…
3 X [(20 X Push-ups) + (20 X Hyperextensions)]
Yesssss…it turns out that I can do push-ups (on my knees obviously) with absolutely NO pain in my back!

Apple Pie Workout

Bicep Curls - 3 X 15 (10lbs)
Shoulder Raises - 3 X 12 (10lbs)
Tricep Extensions - 3 X 20 (10lbs)
Leg Raises - 3 X 20 (no added weight)

Core stabalizing exercise - 15 times each leg
(I learned how to do this the RIGHT way afterwards, so tommorrow I’ll start doing them properly! )
CONTRAST SHOWER

15 minutes of dribbling! (push-pulls)
Heated my calf and stretched the dorsiflexion in my left ankle for 15 minutes (15 seconds on and off)
Iced my ankle and back and heated my back as well, now I’m icing it and going to bed!

David Lee Pong Workout

3 X [(20 X Hyperextensions) + (20 X Push-ups)]
Straight outta bed
Yesss…that means I’m doing them on the FLOOR now…feels even better than before!

No Apple Pie today…
No Dribbling today…

Iced the ankle several times
Iced and Heated the back on and off several times
Heat on the left calf and stretched dorsiflexion of left ankle with belt…
Not enough ROM today…
Little bit of sunshine to get some Vitamin D synthesis happening!!

hmmm…nothing else really…pretty lazy day!

2nd Check-up with surgeon

I really need to start expecting the unexpected at these appointments, they never go the way I think they’re going to.

First of all he is impressed with how well I’m healing, but would like to see a bigger range of motion so I gotta keep working that. As far as the dorsiflexion goes I have more flexibility than he expected and said that it often takes MONTHS for some patients to reach the level I’m at.
Now beyond this point is where the confusion starts happening…
He started asking me about my back and I told him it’s fine and there isn’t much pain anymore. Then we started talking about the brace and he said that in the next couple of weeks I can start weening myself off it when I’m sitting up. Starting by not wearing it just for a few minutes at a time and work my way up. So when I told him that I’m often sitting up without it his reaction was pretty much  … so obvoiusly my reaction to his reaction is  (he told me I can start worrying when he worries). So he starts to explain how he’s worried because the 4 vertebrae are right next to each other, and if it was just one vertebrae then it wouldn’t be a big problem and basically I should have been wearing my brace ALL the time for the past 5 weeks.
This is the reason that you only want to be dealing with ONE doctor. Because the doctor that was working with my back told me that I don’t need to wear the brace except for comfort and higher risk activites like driving and that it would make NO difference to my healing. I wish they had consulted each other on this one.
Next he moves on to the stitches which I specifically went to my GP to ask about and he told me that they were dissolvable and nothing needed to be done with them. The surgeon said that they shouldn’t still be sticking out like that and the holes they’re making are just inviting bacteria in so he asked the nurse to snip them for me. So she starts going at them with the tweezers and razor blade. The first one she did on the left side so I didn’t feel it since I don’t have any feeling in the incision on that side (and if I do have any feeling, the sensation gets sent to my toes…weird  ) so anyways the first one goes fine. There was only one on that side so when she went over to the other side the first one she started doing is the one in the middle of the hole that isn’t healing very well so she starts pulling and digging to try and find the knot to cut it and it’s just hurting like crazy but she finally gets it so she moves on until she’s at about the 3rd or 4th one on the right side then the surgeon comes in and is like “What are you doing? You just need to cut the ends off so they aren’t sticking out so much!!!” So now I have 5 holes in the middle of the incisions where she yanked the DISSOLVABLE stitches out of where they’ve already been healed. I also had one like that in the gash on my right foot and even though she wasn’t pulling it out, just trying to grab the stupid thing with her tweezers nearly killed me it was so painful, it acctually felt like she was jabbing me with the razor blade. Dr. Richardson explained to me that normally the ends of those stiches don’t poke through the skin because they usually have a thicker layer of fat to be buried in, so I guess that was a polite way of saying that I don’t have cankles! :stuck_out_tongue:
So after that fiasco he tells me that I can get rid of the splint in a week or two. I don’t think he understood my concern when I asked him what would happen if I slip while on the crutches. He simply said that I’ve already had the splint on longer than usual because of how bad the break was but I can get rid of it soon. I’m still worried about it though…
Sooo then he asked if he’s given me anything for for inflammation, I told him no but that I’m using Voltaren Gel and he’s like “Did I prescribe that for you already?” (He’s half crazy and losing his mind by the second  ) So then he showed me the prescription and guess what it’s for?..Voltaren Gel…a higher percentage though, the over the counter stuff I have is 1% and his prescription is 5%.
I think that about sums it all up. I can start swimming in one or 2 weeks when my incisions are all healed (which would be much sooner if the nurse hadn’t hacked me up so much!) and I’m not exactly sure when I’m allowed to start weight bearing, for sure not until the next appointment though so nothing to worry about yet.

That’s funny.

Physio Appointment #4

We spent the first 10 minutes or so discussing what was said at the check up. Bill made a very good point when I mentioned that Dr. Richardson is half nuts. “If you think about it, all surgeons gotta be half crazy, I mean they’re cutting people open all day long…”

Did a bit of movement with left ankle, nothing very painful at all. Some good manipulation with the right one though, much more agressive than the first time. Felt good afterwards though, much looser.

About 17 minutes of heating and EMS (level 22…that’s just for my memory) on my calf while I stretched dorsiflexion. This felt a lot less painful than the other times so I guess that means it’s improving…or I wasn’t pulling hard enough.
I’m also allowed to start doing some resistance work with my left ankle, so I’ll set up the elastic thingy to a table or something and then pull my foot (using only my ankle) against it.
Hmmm…that was about it for today.

In exciting news…I drove MYSELF to physio…meaning solo, no passengers…just like the big kids do it!!!

David Lee Pong Workout
3 X [(20 X Hyperextensions) + (20 X Push-ups)]
Straight outta bed…no rest in between today!

lots and lots and lots of vitamin D synthesis today!!! ie. tanning !
Also had a cooler today…not a big deal but thought I would mention it cause it’s my first drink in about 6 months!

I love the random late night workouts! Went from exhaustion and about to go to bed at 9:00 to exercising until midnight!

15-20 minute dribbling session - push-pulls (I guess I can stop indicating that since there isn’t really much else that I can work on…so from now on, any dribbling indicated push-pulls!)

Apple Pie Workout
Bicep Curls - 3 X 15 (10lbs)
Shoulder Raises - 3 X 12 (10lbs)
Tricep Extensions - 3 X 20 (10lbs)
Leg lifts - 3 X 15 (no weight)

Core stabalizing drill - 2 X 20 each leg
Note: Officially did these right for the first time today, felt exactly the way Bill told me they should feel!

I believe that’s all for the night…but IF there’s more then I’ll just have to update again later!

“Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit,
It’s when things seem worse,
that you must not quit

Alrighty, last day of the “workout” week!

Started off the morning with a great David Lee Pong workout
3 X [(20 X Hyperextensions) + (20 X Push-ups)]
No rest in between, this is an improvement because it’s so much harder with out the situps as a “rest” period!
I’ll be moving up on Monday…still haven’t decided if I wanna go for 23 or 25…I’m leaning towards 25 but we’ll see!

Didn’t really do much during the day. Lay in the sun for a few hours (this is VERY important for my recovery by the way…)
Had a shower, no contrasting because I’m technically not sposed to get my incisions wet…but the plastic covering thingys they gave me (neat as they are) proved to be quite useless and my bandages were all soaked right through and had to be removed. They’re not looking too bad acctually, just about 5 more little scabs than usual, and the one hole that wasn’t healing (ya the one that the nurse probed with her tweezers, that’s the one) is looking even worse than before but I guess that’s expected and hopefully now that the stitches are COMPLETELY out it’ll heal up a bit better!

Ahhhh…the sun wore me out like no other, probably didn’t help that I was up until WAY too late last night (2am or so  ). But I’ll get a good rest tonight, and tommorrow is going to be ABSOLUTE RELAXATION!!! No trip to Kelowna, no work, no DLP, no apple pie, no dribbling…I suppose I’ll squeeze in some room for a bit of Vitamin D synthesis but THAT’S IT!!

Anyways…since it’s the last day of my goal setting week…I forced myself into some exercises about 9:00 this evening. Started with a 10 minute dribbling session (sooooo hard to do cause I was so tired, spent half the time chasing the ball down in my wheelchair cause I couldn’t keep the stupid thing in my hands!)
Apple Pie Workout (took it easy today!)
Curls - 3 X 10 (10lbs)
Shoulder Raises - 3 X 10 (10lbs)
Tricep Extensions - 3 X 15 (10lbs)

GOALS FOR THE WEEK!!!

  1. YES (and then some because I added pushups as well…go me!)
  2. YES - It was a struggle but I somehow managed to force myself into it!
  3. NO - Only did 4 days of dribbling
  4. YES
  5. NO - There isn’t a font big enough to express how much I DIDN’T Achieve this goal! Haha…BUT to slightly jsutify it…I’ve lost 10lbs since the accident, and technically I don’t really have 10lbs to loose, so it’s a good sign that my appetite is coming back!

3 outta 5 aint bad! Now at least I have something to gage my goal setting against because I know what a typical week is like!

Tommorrow is the day off so I’ll report back on Monday !

[ol]Apple Pie - 4 days
[li]David Lee Pong (25 reps) - 6 days
[/li][li]Dribbling (minimum 15 minute sessions) - 4 days
[/li][li]Core stabalizing exercise (minimum 3 X 10) - 6
[/li][*]Stretch dorsiflexion with strap (minimum 10min w/ 5 seconds on/off) - 5 days[/ol]

Andrea, I’ll just call you wolverine. Keep up the good recovery. Its crazy how much your doing.

Haha…I like to think Wolverine suites me better than Sunflower!

Physio Appointment #5
Went to the “GYM” today!! Mostly because the Switzerland vs. Ukraine game was in over time and there’s a big TV in the gym!
Started out with the usual, working around and stretching out my right foot. The gash is still really tender and sensitive so he said that I have to start doing the same nerve retraining thing with that (ie. poking and rubbing it with random objects)…Sweeeeeet
Moved on to the left ankle, he was really impressed with my improvement since last session, said it’s much looser and the calcaneous HASN’T fused which is a really good thing, he said he gets more and more optimistic about my recovery after every visit. But he doesn’t want me to get TOO confident with it because I’m going to face a lot of disappointments when I start weight bearing, he said it’s going to be a lot harder and I’ll face a lot more challenges that I’m imagining. At least someone warned me about it this time though, hopefully that will prevent another emotional breakdown from taking place in the future.
Moved on to the BIKE!! 10 minutes, NO resistance to start with and I moved it up as I felt comfortable, so by the end of the 10 minutes, I was at a low level of resistance. Didn’t hurt the ankle too much, just a nice stretch acctually.
Spent the last 5 minutes with the wobble board, sitting on a chair with one foot on the board at a time and trying to touch the edge to the ground all the way around. Not too challenging with my right foot but I could only touch the front and back with the left foot, and a TINY bit of movement to the sides. It’s a start though.
Had to leave early so I didn’t get a chance to do the last exercise he had planned for me but I just did it when I got home. Basically it is a stretchy band on my foot and I start with my leg bent and then straighten it out so the resistance increases as it goes. Felt really good.

David Lee Pong Workout
3 X [(25 X Hyperextensions) + (25 X Pushups)]
Decided to go with the big increase…wasn’t too bad though

Apple Pie Workout
Curls - 3 X 15 (10lbs)
Shoulder Raises - 3 X 10 (10lbs)
Tricep Extensions - 3 X 20 (10lbs)
Side Laterals - 3 X 12 (5lbs) - ya I know…it’s pathetic…but the 10lbs were too heavy and I couldn’t find my 8lbs dumbells :o
3 X 10 (10lbs) - Don’t know the name of this exercise, you start sitting up with your arm bent at 90 degrees with your arms out to your side then push the weight straight up, I alternated arms, not sure if that is right or not…A cookie to the first person to figure out the name of that exercise!!!

Didn’t drink enough water today, which wasn’t a good idea since I’m INSANELY SUN BURNT!!! I’ll pay for that tommorrow I’m sure!

I’m about to put some heat on my calf and work on the dorsiflexion in my left ankle, so if I don’t do that then I’m a serious slacker! :stuck_out_tongue:

Did not get a very good rest last night. Stayed up until about 2am trying to pick courses for next year and then had to get up EARLY to acctually register in them. I’d say I got about 5 hours sleep in all.

Despite how tired I’ve been all day…all attempts to have a nap have failed.
I’ll sleep well tonight though I’m sure!

David Lee Pong Workout
3 X [(25 X Hyperextensions) + (25 X Push-ups)]
o About 2 hours after waking up, but still technically straight outta bed! :stuck_out_tongue:

Didn’t do much working out today, too tired from last night, body needed a rest.

Core Stabalizing - 3 X 10 (each leg)
Push-ups - 3 X 10 (in between)

I’ve been told that I should do my workouts earlier in the day and start taking ZMA, this should help me get a good nights sleep.

Tonight I don’t think sleep will be an issue, I’m pooped.

It’s late and I should be asleep so this will be quick!

Side Dumbell Laterals - 3 X 12 (5lbs)
Overhead Dumbell Press - 3 X 10 (5lbs)

10 Minute Dribbling session

Heat/Ice on back for about an hour
Ice on ankle

Started to prepare myself a little bit for when I begin weight bearing on my left foot. Just holding most of my weight on the other foot and a counter and gradually put more force down on my left foot to try and get the bottom of my foot used to it. Lots of sharp tingling feelings so it’s probably a good idea I work on getting those out of the way before weight bearing. I’ll talk to Bill about it a bit more tommorrow though.

Hmmm…definitly not gonna get enough sleep tonight

Good night!

Arrggg…just remembered one of my goals is 3 X 10 of the core stabalizing drill everyday…so I’m gonna go get that done now!!

Physio Appointment #6

Today I got scolded for being late… :o
Hahaha…I guess he was waiting for the 5th time before he said anything. Since I have been at least 10 minutes late for 5 out of my 6 appointmens so far! However in my defence, the ONE session that I was on time for was the only appointment I drove MYSELF to! :stuck_out_tongue:
Anyways…started out with the usual, loosening up both the ankles. I told him about an issue that I was having with stretching my right calf, a pinching in the joint at the front of my foot kind of. So he got me to do a whole bunch of different stretches (even had to stand on the table for one of them! ) until we could pinpoint it. Then he kind of did a makeshift orthopedic with his hands and it acctually helped a lot…so from now on I just have to do my stretches with my orthopedic or a really good shoe on.
We did a lot of talking today, mostly about useless stuff. But he did give me a really good mental picture of what my foot looked like during the surgery…don’t know why I asked…lol
He asked if I’ve been trying to weight bear at all and I told him what I’ve been attempting. He was shocked that I tried this without my splint on and said that officially he has to say that no I shouldn’t be weight bearing at all, but if it were him he would go by how it feels, but I do need to be REALLY cautious cause too much pressure can set the bones out of place and REALLY delay my recovery.
Then I moved on to the gym…did another 10 minute bike ride (Level 12 = 120 Watts or something)
About 10 minutes on the wobble board. Feet together and individually.
Then used a really strong elastic band for resistance on my right ankle. Probably did about 5 minute, working on dorsiflexion, and sideways movement. My foot was cooked afterwards. He said that elastic was too strong for my left ankle though so just left it at that for the day.

Today was the first time I’ve worn my splint since Monday. Normally I wrap my ankle in a tensor at night but for the past two nights I’ve just left it alone…feels SOOO good.

Ya…I didn’t do my core stabalizing last night. Was already having a hard time falling asleep so I didn’t think getting out of bed to do core drills was going to help. On the bright side I didn’t have to get up early this morning though!

Today however…I went all out with the core…
5 X 10 (each leg)
With 10 pushups in between reps!

So then I was thinking to myself…TECHNICALLY…if I add up all the reps of core stuff I did today…150 (DLP) + 100 (core stabalizing, if I count each leg as one) + 50 more pushups = 300
Man…that’s almost being an athlete right there!!!

Dribbling - 20 minutes

Apple Pie
Curls - 3 X 12 (10lbs)
Shoulder Raises - 3 X 12 (10lbs)
Tricep Extensions - 3 X 20 (10lbs)
Side Dumbell Laterals - 3 X 12 (5lbs)
Overhead Dumbell Press - 3 X 12 (5lbs)

Bill is going to be out of town all next week so I’m going to be seeing Avis, the lady who used to own his clinic, at the begining of the week and he told me to decide from that if I want to go back and see her later in the week or just wait til he gets back.

I acctually did post this already…but apparently my computer freaked out and I just realized that it never went through. So I guess I’ll do it all again!

David Lee Pong
3 X [(25 X Hyperextensions) + (25 X Pushups)]

Decided to get all my working out done really early in the day today, that went well. Felt good for the rest of the day, nothing on my “To Do” list.

Dribbling - 10 minutes (5 minutes eyes open 5 minutes closed)

Core - 5 X 10 stabalizing (each leg)

  • 5 X 10 pushups in between

Apple Pie
All sets of 10 today for some reason…
Curls, Tricep Extensions and Shoulder Raises - 3 Sets (10lbs)
Side Dumbell Laterals and Overhead Dumbell Press - 3 sets (5lbs)

Didn’t do anything with my ankle really…iced for a bit and that’s about it.

HAPPY CANADA DAY!!

Today I was LAZY

David Lee Pong
o 3 X [(25 X Hyperextensions) + (25 X Pushups)]

Did nothing with my ankle again today…Now it looks more swollen than usual…tommorrow I’ll work with it a lot and get it back in shape!
I did tickle/aggravate my foot a fair bit though!

Core - 2 X 10 Stabalizing! Woot woot!

Tough workout…that’s about it…

I was pretty dumb the last few days…drank a fair bit on Friday night and didn’t drink enough water to go with it so I planned on making up for it by drinking a lot of water today but that didn’t work so well cause I had no one to get me any…and I wasn’t even a tiny bit thirsty all day…which is a pretty good sign that I’m super dehydrated. Tommorrow is going to be different though.
I’m also going to start going to bed earlier and getting up earlier in the morning cause this schedule sucks!
