Andre DeGrasse to Altis

lol in London they had to wear layers due to the cold…now what?

I forgot to put a link in my post above…“racing” through it and all.

RE Ben’s plan - according to one of his interviews afterwards.

BJ “In the Semis I decided I’d send panic into them all with a strong race, but I was a bit upset when they called a false start on me”

I also didn’t put in T Gay beating Powell after the WCs in 09. (Even though it was a month later).
To be fair to Powell, he had been through quite a bit that year with foot problems so he def gets a pass this year but
he still came through on the day it counted very well.

Anyways, Go Andre DeGrasse!!!

maybe so but Pre Zurich Ben said he was doing lots (he likes that word- lots-(h)eggs) …“working on my upper body. I’ve run a lot of 150s in practice. I’m still in good shape…”
He ran a lot of 120s also.

Speed may lead strength but working out the upper body certainly helped his bench press.
The 150s helped him no doubt.
The chance to rest Physically and Mentally after his injury in May was at the right time.

My first observation here is that Andre ran 6.61 at Millrose. He ran 6.60 in Tyson last year. I know that leaving USC for ALTIS was Puma’s choice, not Andre or his parents. ALTIS has some big shoes to fill after last year, and thus far they are not filling them.

Regarding Caryl Smith-Gilbert vs professionals, I think I’m not exactly the only person after last year to go through Caryl’s presentations with a fine toothed comb seeking answers to the question, “How did she do that?”, and I think I see a couple of things, besides substantial amount explosive/eccentric development:

(1) In training, she appears to be only going above 90% load once a week, and that is special endurance. Two other days about acceleration and explosive strength are listed as 80-90%, so I think one thing is to not run down athletes in training, and that is certainly something that Charlie would wholeheartedly support. See here:

http://www.ustfccca.org/assets/symposiums/2014/Sprints-SmithGilbert-2014.pdf

(2) Races for speed endurance. Remember there was a thread by G-force (Gerald Phiri), where Charlie said “Speed endurance is best developed in races” and suggested a comp schedule where the only hard effort is a race and everything else is submax.

I see in the USC schedule that they are doing 7 race weeks in a row starting in 2-3 weeks, then there’s a break for preparation for championships

Yes, I recall Charlie mentioning on occasion how Ben told him he didn’t want to perform anything beyond 150 or so and that was when he ceased performing any special endurance runs longer than that.

Charlie actually posted on here that Ben ran 2X200 slightly under 20.0 with 30 minutes. But we have Angella Issajenko, who said that Ben’s secret was that he refused to do long SE. And with Ben, Dr. Pfaff, and Tony Wells not going over 150, I frankly don’t see the reason to, provided you’re doing the special endurance.

I agree. In principle, no sprinter necessitates sprint work much beyond the distance of their event. The question, however, is what each sprinter responds to most effectively during each stage of their development. In this way, we know the value of long to short and aggregate approaches for certain sprinters at certain times.

from what I heard Stu works with Andre, not Dan. I love Altis and what they do. However I don’t get why anyone would change what works and leave a system for another one after they got a bronze in the world championship and won pan am. He only needso be a little faster to win a medal in Rio. I’m sure another yr with his collegiate coach would facilitate

Ditto Ditto

This is no knock on Caryl Smith-Gilbert but do you realize that Andre practically got off the bus in LA and on the first day of practice with no training or preparation did a flying 30m at a WC level?

 1. she didnt screw him up. If you think that’s minuscule, its not. There are some really bad coaches out there with good reputations because they produce All americans, who are survivors of their programs, rather than the usual of their program

 2. In no way does a flying 30 neccessarily mean you can run under 10 in a 100, and way under 19 in a 200. There’s NFL guys that can run a flying 30 very fast, and they’s fizzle in the last 40m of a 100 and the last 100 of a 200.

 3. Results matter. Caryl Gilbert gets results.

I don’t understand why if you stay healthy, you run tremendous, faster than before, win medals, that you’d want to change that. I hope it works out for him though.

If anyone watched the Millrose Games you saw a very unimpressive list of times, for a variety of events, including the men’s 60m which Andre won despite a bad start. He ran the field down, however, the times were all +6.6 thus the end result of the win was good yet not by way of the time.

maybe she was testing him?..glad he didnt pull a ham

Yes, of course she was testing him. What I meant was…Translation = MONSTER Talent on her hands.
Re Pull
Nah, she is a good coach…how many Coaches wouldn’t believe what they saw timing wise though? and say
Do another…and another…Pull.

 1. I want to see other coaches websites where they tell there story. You know, the entire full story from beginning to now story. I’d be interested in that.

 2. How much do we really know? I keep telling my son. Just because it’s a video of what ever we don’t know for sure what people are doing in their training.

 3. Races, results and records for the most part 100 percent of the time count for a great deal. ( Okay I did hear a story recently about an Australian coach who was bringing a fake tape measure to the track to get someone qualified for the Olympics at a meet. I thought I had heard a lot but that story did surprise me)

 4. It’s incredible to have talent such as what appears to be the case with DeGrasse. Time will give us all much more information about his longevity and ability to produce year after year.

 5. I’d prefer not be skeptical about ALTIS but money making appears to be at the heart of this organization.( if anyone has more specific info i’d love to hear it) Bravo I say from one perspective. I more than anyone think that making money is important for each person, coach and athlete. I want to make the point that I have no specific information regarding Altis so maybe I should keep my mouth shut. We are able to conclude thus far that this location/ organization appears to be drawing a lot of interest. Is Altis a place to develop athletes, inherit established talent or are they the purveyors of providing services for those who can afford these services? I did not enjoy hearing the recent story about one of our fellow Canadians going there who has no food, can’t pay rent but feels the need to be there. Not every male or female sprinter/ athlete is perverse enough to run a 1 900 Porn website to finance their dream to win the mens 100 meters.

 6. Caryl Smith Gilbert was an athlete of accomplishment and while she has shown the world paper plan this doesn’t mean her program tells the entire story. Clearly she did a great job by all accounts for the limited time she advised him.

 7. I’ve yet to hear the completed version of a story I recently was being told…, my conversation was interrupted but it went something to the effect that our darling male sprinter whom we are all currently fawning over ( myself included) treated Ms. Gilbert Smith badly when leaving USC. I hope this has not been the case.

 8. Thanks Lkh for posting some comments from what appears to be a conversation you may have had with Mr. Pfaff. I asked Pfaff for a interview for my blog and he refused.

Puma forced that change of coaches. I was told he did not want to leave CSG.

Forced or encouraged to look into them? and he liked what he saw/felt.

We shall see.

Ange,

Funny you bring this up at this moment-

"1…the entire full story from beginning to now story.

 1. How much do we really know? I keep telling my son. Just because it’s a video of what ever we don’t know for sure what people are doing in their training."

I just drafted an email to my son’s Baseball Coach about what I have done with him, what works what doesn’t and how we can work together…he was yelling at my son as well as the other kids in practice last week and every parent seemed scared of him. So every time he yelled at the players I corrected him on something he did not do right. Although he has great baseball knowledge he clearly needed me to step in. at least, that is how I saw it lol… His Asst who Coaches HS ball didn’t appreciate it at first but they knew I was right and that I only do it b/c the kids deserve it. He is much calmer now and we are all working together. It will take work for it to be this smooth all season but I am in this for the long haul.

Ok…back to Track.

Forced to move to a professional only coach and away from a collegiate coach who had school/team responsibilities.

i have a hard time believing that he couldnt make demands if they want him to sign, such as same coach, and pay for his tuition for one more semester or so, to graduate. Theres room for that when you’re that popular of a client that they’d pay that much money for you.

The other side of that is if he’s getting paid a lot more from PUMA than other potential suitors, he might feel forced to give in to some of their demands and it did come down to PUMA wanting him to be with a coach of professional athletes only.

Balance, how old is your son? I hope you continue to make inroads with the coach for the sake of your son, for you and for the coaches own development. You might sell him on some of this content and sell him on the idea that by using enlightened ideas ( Charlie did not invent his ideas per say but he practiced what he learned from many and knew enough to grow his ideas and he did create something cool) his team will dominate. ( appeal to the coach for him to gain power :adoration: . It sounds like me might want and need power to feel good.
