Obikwelu starts in his 100m heat at 2006 Euros

Now we understand why England’s Tim Benjamin lost badly in the 400m final at 2006 Euro Champs. . . no self-respecting athlete would want to get beaten by a skinny neon-white guy wearing bike shorts and knee-length black stockings. He’s dead-set had a shocker as can now be seen . . .

I think the dude in the middle is Tim Montgomery in disguise

This is the best I’ve seen Francis look since Athens. If you look at the other shots from earlier in the season you’ll notice his foot is exeternally rotated before touch down, his torso is twisted and he tightens up. In these photos he looks very “square” and his feet are straight. Expect some good times in the remainder of the season if he keeps this form.

Lol! Thanks kitkat was trying to find that picture. :stuck_out_tongue:

actually it’s thanks to Nanny69, who posted this rarity (lol) under Off Topics/Discussion in “favorite T&F pix” thread. Wonder if she is now having second thoughts about posing for that one. It’s sure to get a bigger run post Euros.

I think that shot was in 2000 before the olympics, have the magazine over here

It was a new men magazine and this was their first edition, it had some other belgian athletes (other sports) in it too.
She will be payed enough for it, Kim is a smart girl and knows what she does. She did also ads for Milner Cheese & McDonalds and now she became the European face for Rodania watches who also sponsor the Olympics in Beijing. For the people who dont know, she has a university diploma in Logopedia, she combined her studies and athletics until 2002 i think.

Please explain for the thickos like me :o

How wide is a lane? 1.5m give or take? something like that - i know shirvo has a powerful start, but how innefficient is it? that first 10m he covers every inch of that 1.5m, still out in front, then dies.

the lane is 1.22, someone forgot to tell him it is shorter between two points if he runs in a straight line.

This is taught by quite a few sprint coaches. At MARKS eyes looking just behind the starting line. On SET pivot body so that eyes looking back towards feet. In speed trap charlie talks about how ben used a different position, if i recall correctly. It had something to do with spine position after driving out of the blocks but i can’t recall exactly.

No thicko…everyone misses somethng along the way . . . stepover describes the action whereby the foot of the free leg crosses at or above the knee of the support (grounded) leg during the stride cycle. It looks a bit like someone taking a step upwards. By the way, it is during the approach to the cross-over and through until momentarily after it that dorsiflexion occurs.

Thanks, that confirms what I had understood it to be.

Now for the thicko bit :o specifically who in this pic was the comment referring to?

Obikwelu looks like a running robot/cyborg with his hands/knees coming up that high

Yes, Obikwelu.

He may look like a robot but then he’s a man of Gold (at the Euros) and Silver (at the Athens OGs), so go figure. He gets the job done the best he knows how. Results suggest he hasn’t done too poorly. In fact Obi’s action isn’t that much more exaggerated than King Carl’s.

Thank you.

I thought there was a view (raised by PJ?) that Obikewlu’s knee lift was excessive

EDIT found it, last post on P11

Following an other thread about knee lift, this is pictures of Francis Big Obikwelu in Athens 2006 meeting (heats) at about 50m.

This looks like more a long jump run-up than sprinting. Look ROM for thighs and arms. And dorsiflexion (pictures 4 5 6).

“first 10m?” And the Rest . . .
