a new exercise?

Which is more difficult -

Captaining an Irish team (with more than just 1 Lion by the way)

or

Captaining the AB’s?

I actually think Henson is as weak as a kitten in Rugby terms and as yellow as I have seen in international rugby in years.
I disagree - I wouldn’t use the word bulk in the sentance as Henson.

(We don’t agree on much do we? Just as well we don’t play it as our first sport JOC?)

i never asked you no23, what is your sport? or are you a coach?
Any notable numbers or athletes under ya?

oh btw i’ve got my powerlifting bands on order. should have them next week so i can test the band stomp out. already everyone looks at me funny in the gym so i think with this exercise i’ll pass into the crazy category in everyones eyes!!

aswell got my 3 pack of DVDs coming - jane + fundamentals 1&2. cant wait!!

Here is an unbiased view from a friend of mine in the UK who is very knowledgeable about and sees a lot of rugby.

Who’s best?

Tana:

pros: very strong defensively and obviously a very fine captain, fierce runner over the final 22m of the pitch and doesn’t suffer from white line fever.

cons:can be a bit flat footed in his fierce defense and certainly doesn’t have the gas to break the line and go through the gap

BOD

pros: THE BEST at line breaks, those twinkle boots must have hidden cameras in to see those lines and gaps, has the gas to carry it out as well, killer passing game long and short

cons: never seen him as a strong figure, certainly not strong enough to be captain, AB’s have a problem and everyone goes to Tana, Ireland have a problem and I never see the same response from the Iirish?

So mann gegen mann, I would have to choose (drum roll) Brian O’driscoll, captains can be made but that type of class can’t be. My disclaimer is that if both were the same age I would go for Tana as I think that is a factor in the pace and line breaks!

I recall when Tana said he wanted to move from wing to the centres, most said he was nuts and he would have to move as he was unproven there and would have been in at best 3rd spot even for his province…he proved them wrong.

My sport is Gaelic Football.
Have trained, treated and coached athletes other sports.

I work in Sports Injury and also in Sports Performance with some one-on-one coaching. I also talk with some intercounty coaches and advise some club coaches too.
I do not work with teams/clubs.

Yes

But the athletes from other sports I only contribute on certain specific issues such as GPP, rehab, speed etc. For example with hurling don’t know as much as someone directly involved in the sport, so I just deal with, treat and advise on what I know.

are you still playing?
ever play for a county team? you’re from meath arent you?
i know little enough about football but i might have heard of you.

i was just wondering what some of your athletes in GAH are capable of. i know im fairly slow and unfit but in the weights room id love to know how i compare.

you know of any guys with good numbers in stuff like PC’s or squat, bench etc?
what about 30m sprint times?
My ultimate goals are sub 4s 30m, a 140kg PC and Jerk @ 77kg, and being able to go comfortably under 28s for 200m for reps with little recovery.
Would any GAA athletes be able to do those? Im sure many would do the last one, fewer would do the first and no one in ireland can do the middle one.
I know these are stupid q’s but i love hearing stories of ppl training and their numbers in other sports. you dont hear numbers so much in Gaa circles but i suppose a time will come…

I’m not saying this to be smart -

But the next guy you mark won’t ask you what you squat for the simple reason it alone doesn’t matter.

Remember - partilcualrly in team sport - being a better athlete is alot more than numbers.

I helped one guy a few years ago with lifting. he worked so hard and figurewd that strength was his biggest wekaness. It almost became like a drug to him, I was surprised that someone could get so hooked on numbers, and that was all that mattered to him. His game always seemed to come second, his performances suffered and he became very injury prone becuase he couldn’t keep a balanced approach.

Also comparsion in lifts is for the most part pointless.

There are some very fast guys out there.

Also many guys (most of those I’ve helped)stick to basic lifts, squat, bench and supplemental work.

Remeber Michael Jordan wasn’t the highest jumper in the NBA - in fact he wasn’t even the highest jumper in the Bulls (according to the Bulls fitness tests).

What does that tell you?

ah ya i know all that.
numbers in a weight room mean little outside of it.
but i love hearing stories of top athletes training you know.i love training full stop.

dont worry im long gone now from that road where the weight room was the be all and end all. im only there 3x a week now.
im following the gpp dvd and i can feel improvements all the time in my pace.

so any stories? no need to name names.
from my contacts in UL the best powerclean on the munster rugby team is 130kg and i went to school with their best bench presser. 155kg last year so i suppose he’s closer to 170kg now maybe. havent talked to him in ages. must get onto him

I was onto a guy in the UL rugby academy and i asked him his 30m time and he said he has done 3.9s. at the time i didnt realise how fast this was. now i realise its crazy fast and wonder if its valid. it might be hand timed as he definitely isnt the fastest guy i know of.

Better than Christian Cullen? I don’t know the numbers but he his bench was in the top 3 of the AB’s when he played for them and is legendary.

Cullen was about 145kg when he came to Munster and i doubt he has progressed any since.
He may have been as high as 155kg in his prime though. I think we all know he came to munster for early retirement. Has to be the worst buy ever like…
i’ve heard the stories about his benching abilities though. For a slight looking guy (compared to some others) he must be crazy strong. a superb athlete in his day no doubt. He still has some of the gas in his legs but most is gone now. Id love to have seen him in a red jersey when he was 24. Heineken Cup for sure!!

Cullen is Legend

He was the strongest AB bench presser outside the front row

True regarding retirement. I haven’t heard much about him since he left, has he been that bad?

Some of the trys he scored in his prime are unbelievable, have you seen the one from under his own posts at the Hong Kong 7’s when he was about 19?

yes i’ve seen that one. awesome…

hey john how come you’re banned?
i got banned under another alias for accidentally posting the same thread twice!! i got no warning or anything. it was my browsers fault…
