Okay, here is the post-workout report. She did 12 reps, skipping a couple of intervals. She quit when too light-headed to do more. Given that she has been training for only a month, I told her she had done fine and had turned a potentially harmful workout into a productive one. BTW, she said a couple of girls did 30 reps. Those must have been girls with unbelievable aerobic bases but, still, holy cow!
The coach of the best high school track team in my circuit makes his runners run 20x200 or 16x400 or 16x300 be they are sprinters or distance runners…if it works for them…why not??
Championship for 5 straight years for them…all his boys are getting D1 scholarships all over the country.
Good point. I consistently get my ass handed to me by those who are not as enlightened as I am (being serious) so who knows. Didn’t michael johnson let herschel walker in on one of his 20x200m sessions and herschel almost collapsed after about 10?
Everything can work as long as you don’t get sick or injured.
I am personally close friends with most of the guys on that team because we spent the summer together at track camp at a nearby hs…they let me in on how they’ve been winning championships. I really like their workouts and implemented their workouts into my summer program…I gotta tell you, and you guys already know, those workouts have really helped me improve.
Me personally, last I checked in the summer, could do 16x200s at around 32-34s. Now, I think I can do all 20.
And for the 300s, let’s not get to those distance numbers (12+), I can do 8 reps.
20-30 200’s @35 sec with 1 min rest is for a 59 sec girl who has only been training a few months much harder than 16 x200 @32 sec (you did not mention rest) or corresponding 300’s for a 47-48 low male 400 runner.
The other girls may have been 400-800 girls.Do you know the pr’s of the girls who finished the WO? I have a few who can do WO’s similar to the one you mentioned. Of course they have better 400 pr’s and they have a much stronger aerobic base.
I’d say your girl did about well as can be expected.
