Zelezny announces farewell events

Three-time Olympic javelin champion Jan Zelezny will take part in three more events before he retires at the end of the season.

The 40-year-old Czech will compete at the IAAF world athletics final in Stuttgart on 9 September.

He will have his last domestic appearance at a meeting in Mlada Boleslav 10 days later with his final event in Japan on 24 September.

Zelezny will work for the IOC and coach in Prague after his retirement.

Zelezny won Olympic gold medals in Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney, and claimed World titles in 1993, 1995 and 2001. He also set five world records.

He still holds the world best of 98.48m  and won bronze at the European Championships in Gothenburg later this month.

The former army officer has been struggling with a persistent Achilles injury in recent seasons, a problem which kept him out of last year’s World Championships.
