BATON ROUGE – After winning four NCAA Championships last week, LSU track and field sensation Xavier Carter announced on Wednesday that he will pursue a professional career in the sport.

Check back for the complete story.

Carter, a sophomore from Palm Bay, Fla., was named the NCAA Division I Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year it was announced Friday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The award completes a sweep of this year’s national awards for Carter as he was also named the indoor athlete of the year in March.

Carter was recognized after making history at last week’s NCAA Outdoor Championships, becoming the first athlete to ever win both the 100 and 400 meters at the national meet. Coupled with LSU’s victories in the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays, Carter joined Jesse Owens as the only other athlete to ever win four events at an NCAA meet.

In recording the four victories, Carter posted a pair of personal-bests and one school record mark. His time of 10.09 seconds in the 100-meter final shattered his previous school record of 10.12 set in April, while his time of 44.53 in the 400 meters ranks as the second fastest time in school history.

In all, Carter accounted for 25 of the Tigers’ 51 points at the NCAA Championships, a total that would have placed him 12th in the final team standings alone.

boooo that sucks…

It could be worse, he could be giving up track for football-at least he’s still in the sport.

What’s so bad? The guy with probably the most potential in track right now and we’re upset he’s going pro??

Till after Beijing then he’ll go to football.

Is this just a guess or did you see that somewhere?

i wanted to see the x vs dix rivalry heat up in ncaa…

Madam Zorba’s crystal ball :stuck_out_tongue:

So I guess this Zorba lady is reliable and her crystal ball is in good, working order?

We’ll know in 2009 won’t we

us florida boyz is blowing it up, gatlin, carter, dix…and many more yall dont know about yet. We are the fastest state!
Xman is not outstanding in football, just fast. I think he will be like capel do stint in the nfl and go back to track. Did he even start for lsu this year?

What’s the deal with going pro in track and how that affects his eligibility to play NCAA college football?

he’s still totally eligable for football. he just can’t sign an endorsement deal. so its almost self defeating.

Screw it, I’d either go all out and take the endorsement from a major company (Nike, Adidas, etc.) while I could, or I’d just stay in college track another year. What is the purpose of him going pro if he is unable to sign an endorsement deal, just out of curiosity?

No he didn’t start. Apparently he had a good relationship with Saban but hasn’t gotten along so well now that he’s gone. I think he got like 1 touchdown but did not play a significant role on the team.
