I’ve never tested the deadlift or cleans, but the highest i’ve squated was 515. This was my senior year in high school. (5’ 9"/160) Which was the year right before I tested my vertical. I didn’t do much olympic lifts in high school, but my first year away to college I started doin them. I never tested my squat after high school, but I know it was more than high school. When I tested my vertical I was still 5’ 9", but I weighed 175.

(Freshman 15?)

This board or the old one?

Search through these topics. There is 3 or 4 that deal with jumping.

:mrt:Man, how long hvae you people been working on vert? and especailly the guy with 46", what kinda natural vert you have? by the way, i have a vert of 25" standing now, my natural was 13", will I still gain? Can i ever get to 40"?(i guess i have more slow twitch cuz i started with a real low vert

I am a 5’9" bodybuilder who at the time of the test was 275. Witout even stretching out, I hit 28-29 inches on vert test. I used to be much more explosive as i was a fullback in college. I have not really trained explosively in a long while. My partner just came back from the regional scouting combine in Columbus and he hit 38". He trains power and oly lifts plus a lot of box work. He deads about 550, did a 340 clean and squats in the 550-575 neighborhood at about 200 lbs. All natural as well. Anything is possible. You just gotta work for it. Worst you can do is max your potential.

I have dunked three times in my life…after using the Air Alert program …(if me today was training me in HS I would have maintained a good VL) now its 26…:frowning:

well, i never have dunked even once in my life… still working on it…I dont know if I will be able to someday…(2 hands if possible)

You and me both Kobe. I can now squeeze out a baby dunk of a one legged jump, but I’m training hard to increase my double legged vert. I don’t know exacty how high I jump, but I don’t think I hit 30" yet. I recently begon with the O-lifts, and they have already done me some good. I use the full squat and clean and snatch from the hang. I completed the dr. squat program a couple of weeks ago and now embarking on a new adventure on something I put together myself. 4 next season I hope 2 be able 2 dunk with 2 hands of my 1 legged jump, and maybe a babydunk of my double. perhaps I’m 2 optimistic, but hey, reach for the stars right?
Kobe, keep me posted on your gains and how you got them. Maybe we’ll inspire eachother…

gained about 3" on my 2legged vert, a little less on my 1 legged. It’s not stunning, but after air alert I happy with any gain…
So you’ve been lifting 4 5 months now right? any gains yet. Have you done programs in the past?
BTW I can’t find your Wlifting program, could you give me the basics?

I used to play basketball in high school. When I was sixteen I went on a school camp, which entitled climbing two mountains (well Australian mountains, 1000 meters above seas leave) in a week. I was carrying a backpack that weighed between 8 and 10 kg, the backpack got lighter the more food I ate. When I got back from went camp I went from not being able to dunk to being able to dunk easily. By the time I finished school (seventeen) I could dunk with my right hand off my left foot, my left hand off my right foot (this was hard for my coordination), two handed off either foot or both feet. Also I could dunk from a standing start just under the ring. I did not lift weights at the time. I put a lot of my jumping ability down to hiking.

Of course I am 194cm so dunking is not that impressive

Also I grew a lot in high school and was very un-coordinated. I started to get some of my coordination back towards the end of high school. As a result I could jump high and was pretty fast. But I ruined myself by drinking for most of the next three years. What could have been?

what kind of camp was it, i’m thinking of joinging a camp this summer too. But my dad wants me to work, lol

I didn’t lift when I used to play basketball. Now I lift and sprint and don’t play basketball. Strength levels have improved greatly, but I haven’t improved much on vertical. Just jump and try to touch the rim and play basketball as much as possible and I think your vertical will go up.

It was an ordinary school camp, not an athletics/sport camp.

As I remember it:

Day 1 climb up and down an 800-meter mountain, camp at bottom of mountain.
Day 2 walk to the next Mountain along “flat” ground, camp at base of mountain.
Day 3 climb 1200-meter mountain, camp on top.
Day 4 climb down 1200-meter mountain, go home.

This was just how I got to be able to dunk. It probably was not optimal training but it worked for me. If I had done a simple strength and conditioning program I am sure I would have done even better.

Without sounding like an “old-timer” I will offer some advice. If you can get a good holiday job take that. Also start a simple training program that you stick with for months if not years or decades.

Two points:

1 There is more to basketball than dunking. Work on mid distance shooting (forget three points the increased risk of missing is not worth the reward of the extra point), defence (get stronger in the upper body and hips for blocking out, checking and rebounds) and work on your speed and endurance (short sprints in all direction and aerobic work). If you do this you will be a much better player than simply a dunking machine.

2 You do not need a huge vertical leap to dunk. If you can touch the rim with you wrist you should be able to dunk when your timing and coordination improves.

One more thing, don’t ever hang onto the rim it is a recipe for disaster and injury. This is from personal experience!

Im just over 5’10’ or say 5’10 and standing with both hands up I can reach around 7’6". With no run up, that is, standing still, I can get around 2 inches over the rim with both hands so I guess that means my vert is around 32’. I’ve always wanted to dunk but train for the 100m and even though my time has improved from like 11.5 to 10.9 my leap has stayed the same. But it’s 32’ for me and let me say that 46’ is very impressive. I think Spud Webb had 50’.

Those that have a good lifting program AND play basketball should be able to dunk, and if they can’t, it should only be a matter of time. this is assuming they are not 5-7/ 5-9 etc…, unless they’re Spud web or simmilar. I’ve done a 360 degree slam dunk of 2 feet. I’m 185/186cm, 6ft 1in tall. My standing vertical was nothing amazing. Basically 33in". my running vertical was 39.5 in. At the time I was not doing squats or oly lifts though I had done them meny times previously to that point and many times since.
I think that a lot of the people that want to dunk don’t even play basketball or dont play for a team, (vigorous play.)
The differance between some players running vertical and standing vertical (even with a ball in there grasp) is often the differance between not dunking and dunking. Co-ordination is a massive factor.
One day a local amateur (club level) high jumper was warming up on the court before his high jump practice. He was doing layups. I was not impressed. I asked him if he could dunk the ball. He said no. Still, I did not challenge him to a track and field style high jump competition!

I would love to know what the vert of the high jumper Javier Sotomyer (spelling) is for he was able to get his back around 8 foot 1 inch in the air (ie: be horizontal at that height) which would make his vert huge. At that height he could basically raise his arm and touch the tim (He is around 6’5" I think).
