Richards broke the facility record at Arkansas in the 400 meters on Friday (armorytrack.com)
Tyson Foods Invitational
The Tyson Foods Invitational got off to a fast start on Friday hosted by Arkansas. Sanya Richards of Texas, the national high school record holder in the 400 meters, broke the 52 second barrier with her winning time of 51.94. Her time also broke the facility record, which was previously held by Mikele Barber of South Carolina in 2000 with her time of 51.97. Richards is the first collegiate female to break 52 seconds indoors since Barber’s time 3 years ago. Teammate Moushaumi Robinson was second to Richards in 52.80.

Other highlights from Friday included the Florida women dominating the weight throw again as this time Erin Gilreath took the title with her toss of 67-06.75. Teammate Karen Freberg won the shot put with her throw of 53-11.25. Elva Goulbourne of Auburn kept her national leading mark in the long jump with her leap of 21-07.25. In an event which saw former Florida standout and Olympian John Capel win in 20.39, current Gator Kyle Farmer took third in the 200 meters with his time of 20.76. TCU was led by 800 meter specialist Jackson Langat who won the event in 1:48.42. Senior Jermaine Joseph also recorded an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 200 meter dash with an indoor personal best time of 21.10.

Perhaps the performance from the Tyson Invitational goes to Veronica Campbell of Barton Community College. The soon-to-be star at Arkansas turned the track on fire with her time of 22.63. Only Merlene Ottey from Nebraska back in 1982 ran faster in the collegiate ranks. Sanya Richards, who set a facility record earlier in the 400, got her automatic bid with her time of 23.09. Christin Wurth of Arkansas hit the auto mark in the 5000 meters with her winning time of 16:16.79. Lauryn Williams of Miami claimed the 60 meter title with her time of 7.25. Elva Goulbourne of Aubun was a close second in 7.28. Both times also met the automatic standard. Allen Simms of USC, a transfer from George Mason, soared in the triple jump with his automatic winning mark of 55-05. Teammate Julien Kapek also met the auto standard with is mark of 53-02.25. The women’s triple jump also saw an automatic mark met by Ychlindria Spears of Texas with her leap of 43-02.25.

Saturday’s action saw Alistair Cragg of Arkansas winning the Olympic Development 5000 meters in 13:35.93 which currently leads the nation. Teammate Daniel Lincoln came in second with his time of 13:44.12. Mindi Pukstas of SMU placed third in 13:45.10. Tiffany McWilliams of Mississippi State claimed the mile run with her national-leading time of 4:36.89. Kentucky won the men’s DMR with their season best time of 9:35.41. SMU was second in 9:36.80. The Texas women just missed setting a new collegiate indoor record in the 4x400m relay with their winning time of 3:30.20. Chris Mulvaney of Arkansas broke 4 minutes in the mile run, as the fastest collegian in the race, with his time of 3:58.94. The men’s 4x400m relay saw Kansas City CC take the victory with their time of 3:05.93. TCU came in second in 3:06.23.

Armory Collegiate Invitational
New York City was host to the annual Armory Collegiate Invitational. Friday’s results saw Muna Lee of LSU advance to the finals in the 200 meters with her time of 23.18. North Carolina claimed the women’s DMR title with their automatic qualifying time of 11:08.56. Laura Gerraughty of North Carolina improved on her NCAA DI national lead in the shot put with her mark of 57-10.25. She also won the weight throw with her toss of 65-02.75. Ashton Collins of Texas dipped under 21 seconds in the 200 meters with his time of 20.93 to advance to the finals. Freshman Richard Kiplagat of Iona won the 5000 meters with his impressive time of 13:41.25. Ben Dawson of Texas was second with his time of 13:57.90 which gave him his ticket to Arkansas.

Saturday’s action saw Muna Lee of LSU and Aleen Bailey of South Carolina tie for the 200 meter title as they both hit 23.28 in each of their sections. Allison Beckford of Rice won the 400 meters with her time of 52.34. Kenneth Baxter of Purdue held off a strong field to take the 200 meters as he came through the line in 20.85. Gary Kikaya of Tennessee nearly broke 46 seconds in the 400 meters with his winning time of 46.01. Adrian Blincoe and Ryan Hayden of Villanova both broke the 4-minute barrier as they went 1-2 in the mile with their times of 3:59.30 and 3:59.72. Michael Baird of Princeton was third with his time of 4:02.71. Corey Taylor of South Carolina hit the auto standard in the 60 meter hurdles with his winning time of 7.74. Teammate Chris Steddum won the pole vault with his height of 17-08.50.

Sykes/Sabock Challenge Cup
Penn State was host to the Sykes/Sabock Challenge Cup as action kicked off on Friday. Julien Dunkley of East Carolina won the 60 meters in 6.63 seconds. Joel Brown of Ohio State won the 60 meter hurdles with his time of 7.77. Consuella Moore of Penn State claimed the 60 meters with her time of 7.41 and then came back to win the 200 meters in 23.62. Molly Logan of Ohio State won the 60 meter hurdles in 8.26. Megan Metcalfe of West Virginia won the mile run with her time of 4:42.97 which just missed the auto standard. Krista Keir of Ohio State took home the shot put title with her throw of 55-03.50. Dan Taylor of Ohio State kept pace as one of the top throwers in the nation with his winning toss of 64-00.25 in the shot put and also winning the weight throw with his mark of 70-11.25.

Washington Invitational
The Washington Invitational saw some fast times in the distance events on the oversized track. The men’s 3000 meters saw the top four collegiate athletes all dip under 8 minutes. Jeremy Park of Washington took the title on his home track while coming through in 7:54.13. The three next athletes all hailed from Stanford as Seth Hejny (7:56.01), Luie Luchini (7:56.70) and Grant Robison (7:58.37) finished behind Park. Lauren Fleshman of Stanford won the mile run with her time of 4:41.83 while her teammate Malindi Elmore took second in 4:42.80. Donald Sage of Stanford ran 4:02.50 in the mile run while his teammate Steve Loughlin came through in 4:04.15. Brad Walker of Washington cleared 18-06.50 in the pole vault which puts him in the national lead.

Iowa State Classic
The Cyclones were host to the Iowa State Classic with events starting on Friday. Mesut Yavas of Arkansas State took home the long jump title with his leap of 25-03.50. Four teams hit the provisional mark in the men’s DMR as Minnesota won the event in 9:40.41, followed by Alabama, Missouri and Wisconsin. Ryan Andrus of Oregon was first in the 5000 meters in 14:06.33. Latonel Williams of Alabama clocked 20.95 in the 200 meters which will send him to the NCAA Championships. Jennifer Bennett of Missouri broke the 13-foot barrier in the pole vault with her clearance of 13-01.50. Kansas State hit the auto mark in the women’s DMR with their time of 11:15.65.

Saturday’s action saw plenty of impressive marks across the board. Gerado Carrasco of UTEP won the triple jump with his leap of 52-03.75. Christian Cantwell destroyed the field in the shot put with his toss of 67-01.50. Josh Spiker of Wisconsin opened up his season with a winning time of 4:04.01 in the mile run. Mitch Potter of Minnesota dipped under 46 seconds in the 400 meters as he finished up in 45.89. Dirk Homewood of Northern Iowa was second with his time of 46.17. Potter then came back to anchor Minnesota to the 4x400m relay title while also hitting the auto mark in the process with their time of 3:06.03. Joseph Lee of Kansas State claimed the 800 meters while clocking 1:48.51. Matt Tegenkamp of Wisconsin won the 3000 meters after running 7:59.63. Shani Marks got her auto mark in the triple jump while hitting 43-08.00. Hometown favorite Gina Rickert of Iowa State nearly jumped out of the facility with her clearance of 6-03.50 in the high jump. Johanna Nilsson of Northern Arizona continues to have an outstanding freshman season as she won the mile run in 4:38.55. Amanda Bales hit the auto standard in the 3000 meters with her 9:17.62 victory.

Eastern Michigan Classic
Boaz Cheboiywo got his auto mark in the 3000 meters at the Eastern Michigan Classic. The Eagle ran 7:52.40 while teammate Gavin Thompson finished second in 8:08.92. Steve Manz of Michigan state improved on his season best performance in the shot put with his toss of 60-05.75.

Montana State Dual Meet Invitational
The Bobcats hosted their dual meet invitational over the weekend. Nathan Robinson of BYU hit the auto mark in the mile run with his time of 4:04.76. Kip Kangogo just missed the standard in the 3000 meters with his time of 8:10.39. James Parker of Montana took over the national lead in the weight throw with his toss of 72-10.50.

Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational
Nebraska hosted the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational as several NCAA calibar marks were met. Misa Mannova of BYU won the 3000 meters in 9:16.79. Leann Boerema of Nebraska hit the auto standard as well in the shot put with her toss of 54-04. Her teammate, Ineta Radevica, won the triple jump while leaping 43-07. BYU was strong in the women’s 5000 meters as teammates Lindsey Thomsen (16:16.37) and Katie Martin (16:18.13) both got their tickets to the indoor championships. Carl Myerscough of Nebraska got his share of the national lead in the shot put with his mark of 68-05.

Fast Track Invitational
Boston University was host to the Fast Track Invitational. Ryan Bak of Trinity College won the mile run with his impressive time of 4:01.45. Liam Reale of Providence was second in 4:04.92. Providence College won the women’s DMR with their time of 11:17.14.

All-Ohio Championships
Findlay hosted the All-Ohio Championships which saw Jackie Jeschelnig of Ashland, who was featured in Sports Illiustrated’s ‘Faces in the Crowd’ this week, win the weight throw with her mark of 65-09.00. Freshman John Russell of Akron claimed the pole vault with his clearance of 17-00.
