Galaxy of stars featured at Mt. SAC Relays
Many of America’s finest athletes will compete Saturday at the 45th Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium in Walnut, California.
The men’s field is highlighted by an outstanding lineup in the 100 meters, headlined by 2000 Olympic gold medalist and three-time world outdoor champion Maurice Greene. The former world record holder in the event, Greene will be challenged by training partner and teammate on the 2000 U.S. Olympic gold medal winning 4x100m relay team, Jon Drummond. Also in the field are 2001 World Outdoor Championships relay gold medalists Mickey Grimes and Joshua “J.J.” Johnson, and two-time world outdoor 200m gold medalist Ato Boldon of Trinidad & Tobago.
Other stars competing this year at Mt. SAC include 2000 Olympic 400m hurdles gold medalist Angelo Taylor in the men’s 400 meters, #4 ranked U.S. men’s 800m runner Jesse Strutzel, 2002 U.S. marathon champion Dan Browne in the 5,000 meters, 1996 Olympic silver medalist Mark Crear in the 110m hurdles and Joey Woody, who ended the 2002 campaign ranked #5 in the world in the 400m hurdles.
Men’s field event action will be headlined by two-time Olympic medalist and three-time world outdoor champion John Godina in the shot put, and two-time defending U.S. Outdoor champion and #1 ranked men’s long jumper in the world, Savante’ Stringfellow.
In women’s competition, LSU’s Muna Lee will compete in the 100 meters after sweeping the 60m and 200 meters at the 2003 NCAA Indoor Championships. Lee, who became the first athlete in nine years to sweep the sprint events at this year’s NCAA Indoors, broke the 21-year-old collegiate indoor record in the 200m by winning the NCAA indoor crown in 22.49 seconds. In other women’s running events, prep star Allyson Felix from Los Angeles Baptist High School will attempt to break Marion Jones’ 1992 national prep record in the 200 meters of 22.58 seconds.
Miesha McKelvy is favored in the women’s 100m hurdles after ending last season ranked #5 in the world after her runner-up finish at the 2002 USA Outdoor Championships. McKelvy will be challenged by Damu Cherry, LSU’s Lolo Jones and Indiana University’s Danielle Carruthers, who ended the 2002 campaign ranked #7, #8 & #9 respectively in the U.S.
In women’s field event action, look for a terrific duel in the long jump as 2002 U.S. Indoor champion and Outdoor runner-up Grace Upshaw, who ended last season ranked #1 nationally, takes on 2002 USA Outdoor champion Brianna Glenn. The women’s hammer also features a strong field as Anna Norgren-Smith, who set the American record on three occasions last year and ended the season ranked #6 in the world, takes on 2002 USA Outdoor runner-up and six-time national outdoor champion Dawn Ellerbe.
In the women’s javelin, defending Mt. SAC champion and 2002 USA Outdoor runner-up Kim Kreiner is the heavy favorite.
