Thx a lot Thor!!! Missed it on TV.
It’s interesting how Scott and Phillips kind of overdo the idea of “drive phase” and hold their heads down and exactly when they decide to look up - bang - the french guy accelerates further (like he accelerates more smoothly and longer) just gets away and leaves them behind.
It was a 6.45

Like it makes any difference, any human that runs 6.45 is god.
The problem is with a sharp transition. If you whip you head up, your butt drops disrupting your acceleration. You can see this slearly as both guys bring the head up and this happens at about the same time- and see what happened- a great example.
See how the torso goes upright when the head rises too much when whipped up.
When I watch the slow-mo replay Thor provided, the block setting of the nearest guy in blue seems EXTREMELY close to the line [like barely over one foot length]. Are my eyes playing tricks on me or is this a specialized 60m strategy?
I checked again. The front foot is over one- but less than two footlengths behind the line. the angle is deceiving but it looks like his hip is ahead of the front foot (barely) as he leans over in set. I don’t recommend this method as it is unstable and leads to false starts, nor would I recommend a different start indoors vs outdoors.
Yes, regardless of being able to hold some reasonable leg angles to the casual eye, my recent experience was that this forward leaning position draws you into some twitchy behaviour waiting for the gun, and trouble keeping pressure against the rear block.
Which guy in blue? On lane 6? That’s Mayola and he often plays with the gun, the other day he had a 0.107 RT, while here it was something like 0.14x from the top of my head. Mechanically it looks like a pale copy of BJ’s start.
That’s an awsome time by Ronald, he had a car accident last week, all in all it gave more good than arm as it allowed him some rest bfore this race.
Theres a definite ‘pop’ out of the blocks alright from the guy in blue (Mayola?). Also, his back foot is not (hard to see) flat against the back-pad. How can set position be latered to allow this (flush with back block)?
All in all, good position at 40m…
Exactly, only the ball of his foot is in contact with the blocks, there’s something like 1/2 centimeter space between blocks and heel. This from closer footage view of his start.
yep…Freddy Mayola (Cuba) His settings are like that cos he jumps out of the blocks (similar to Ben) and then his 2nd stride is like a bound. Having studied this particular start on a few race tapes i have, this particular start is fast but is inconsistent and also leaves him open because his accel phase isn’t as great as Ben’s!! If races were over 20-30m he’d be a World Champ…but as U know the start should set up your race not finish it.
