US Open & Jnr Champs 2010

Seven world-leading marks were registered at the USA Champs held in swelteringly hot conditions at the Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. On the men’s side Greg Nixon ran 44.61 for 400m out in lane eight, David Oliver clocked 12.93 for 110m hurdles for equal 7th on the world all-time list, and Bershawn Jackson just missed his pb with 47.32 for 400m hurdles. Among the women, world indoor champion Debbie Dunn, a former Jamaican, took the 400m in a pb of 49.64, Chaunté Lowe high jumped a North American record of 2.05, Jenn Suhr vaulted 4.89 and Hyleas Fountain scored a lifetime best of 6735w in the heptathlon. Another American record came in the women’s javelin with Kara Patterson throwing 66.67 to obliterate Kim Kreiner’s mark of 64.19.
There was plenty more brilliant action. Walter Dix built up a huge winning margin in the 100m, running 10.04 into a 1.5m wind, but was himself well beaten over 200m running 20.14 behind Wallace Spearmon’s windy 19.77. The first five in the 400m final all set pbs but Jeremy Wariner pulled up injured on the back straight. With Kerron Clement restricting himself to the flat one might have expected Jackson to have won by a big margin considering his super-fast time but he was run close by 21 year-old NCAA champion Johnny Dutch, a 13.68 sprint hurdler, who improved from 48.12 to 47.63. Dwight Phillips long jumped 8.37 and Christian Cantwell, who can do no wrong this season, led throughout the shot contest although Reese Hoffa made a welcome return to form with a season’s best in second place.
While Jessica Ennis was sidelined with a virus and unable to compete in the UK Champs, Fountain excelled herself in a no-pressure heptathlon. She added 8 points to her best first day score with 4068 thanks to a 12.93 hurdles, a pb high jump of 1.90, 13.73 shot and 23.28w 200m. She got the second day off to a splendid start with a windy 6.79 long jump, threw the javelin 42.26 and, needing just under 2:23 in the 800m for a pb score, ran 2:17.80 despite a blister on her foot. With no major titles to aim for this summer, she will compete in the hurdles and long jump in Europe. Allyson Felix confined her energies to winning her first 100m title but arch-rival Sanya Richards-Ross, in her first competition of the year, encountered problems in the 400m, scratching from the final due to a sore right quadriceps muscle. Lolo Jones a clear winner of the 100m hurdles, a 2.1m headwind slowing her to 12.69. The meeting’s highlight was Lowe’s superb high jumping display. She needed all three tries to get over 1.94 but had first time clearances at 1.97, 2.01 and 2.03 before levering herself over 2.05 on her 12th jump of the competition. As if that wasn’t enough for one day she later placed second in the long jump to Brittney Reese’s windy 7.08 with a remarkable, legal 6.90 to join the ranks of the world elite in that discipline. The former Miss Howard had a best before this year of just 6.26 set way back in 2002 aged 18 when her highest jump was 1.87. Having previously cleared 2.04 this year there was always the possibility of a new continental and national record in the high jump, but Patterson’s javelin throw came as a shock as she had not thrown farther than 61.80 this season before Des Moines and her pb was 63.95 from last year. She raised her season’s best to 62.61 and 62.80 before the 66.67. Suhr (née Stuczynski) made a wonderful return to her best form after injury, coming up with her second highest ever vault of 4.89, just 3cm below her American record. Like Lowe she overcame an early hiccup, needing all three attempts at her opening 4.50! The $25,000 Visa Champion awards for the best performances at the Visa series of meetings in the USA went to Jackson and Lowe.
