The country’s Olympic committee (USOC) announced that its contingent of over 1,000 Olympic and Paralympic athletes and support staff would be based at the University of East London in the run-up to the Games.
The site is just minutes from the Olympic Park and village where the athletes will live. It will house the team’s support staff as well as providing medical and broadcast facilities.
Among the facilities at the complex are a purpose-built indoor arena, basketball and volleyball courts, indoor football pitches and a gym and fitness centre.
However, there is no running track or Olympic-sized pool, and although the USOC have identified alternative facilities within 30 minutes’ drive, these will have to be shared with other countries.
America’s athletics squad will train in Birmingham prior to the Games before joining up with the rest of the team in London.
Scott Blackmun, chief executive of the US Olympic Committee, said: “This is a great opportunity for athletes and staff to use these excellent facilities.”
A spokesman for the university said: “We have started working with the relevant security agencies for the Games.” However, he would not confirm if extra security was being laid on as a result of the heightened risk surrounding the US team.
