The 400m was my focus when I came back to track at age 25 (off since 18). I’ve since found that I am better at the 100m and 200m, so that’s what I’ve trained for since 28 (turning 33 this month). Hit all PBs at 30 (10.81, 21.69, 49.79).
How did you find out?
Well done Brett! Good to hear you managed to sort out your training and get back to PB shape.
Absolutely. Body knows best. Chances are, if you don’t feel like training, you probably shouldn’t.
I know on occasion one might feel sub-optimal prior to training, but then sometimes you feel ready to go after the warm-up. What I mean is, if you feel like you can’t get out of the car after work, or you just feel falling asleep when you walk into the door, you’re probably not going to train at your best.
I appreciate that Robin. You have been a big help and an eye-opener for me along this journey. Thanks for the advice along the way, as stubborn as I have been with you!
I learned through racing. There were those guys I could never beat in the 400m, but could always take in the 200m later in the meet. It finally hit me that maybe the 200m was just my natural fit, so I started to run more 100s and 200s with better results relative to the competition.
I don’t necessarily train for a particular race. I take more of a first principles approach to training: increase maxV, improve acceleration, get strong in the weight room, and maintain good general fitness. My best times at all distances came when maxV was the highest (no surprise there). Race-specific training never really seems to do much for me. The keys have been to remain healthy, fast, and racing for any distance.
Brett seems to have found a similar formula. Train fast; don’t just train to train.
Do you have a training journal on here?
I started one on Bearpowered back in the day. A lot of my training and personal realizations / philosophy can be found there. I might start one here (CF’s site) heading into the 2017 season.

Sorry to hijack your thread, Brett!
No, no, no problem at all man. The more we discuss and interact, the more we learn. Looking forward to checking that bearpowered forum!
