Deep fields ready for Tyson Foods Invitational
2-12-2004
INDIANAPOLIS – The world’s top two hurdlers both will attempt a hurdle/sprint double Saturday at the Tyson Foods Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, as deep fields highlight the schedule.
Defending world indoor 60-meter hurdle champions Gail Devers and Allen Johnson will go for 60-meter/60m hurdles doubles at the Randal Tyson Track Center.
The third stop on USA Track & Field’s Indoor Golden Spike Tour, the Tyson Foods Invitational will be broadcast on Saturday from 9-10:30 p.m. Eastern Time, on ESPN2.
A two-time Olympic 100m gold medalist and seven-time world champion indoors and outdoors in the sprints and hurdles, Devers will run in the Verizon women’s 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles in Fayetteville. The American record holder in both events is undefeated in the hurdles in 2004, having won the adidas Boston Indoor Games (7.85) and Verizon Millrose Games (7.76 world leader). She won the world indoor title in the hurdles in 2003 and was the 1993 and ’97 world indoor champion in the sprint.
The 60m dash field includes 2003 World indoor bronze medalist Torri Edwards and two-time U.S. indoor champion Chryste Gaines. In the hurdles, Devers’ competition includes 2003 World Outdoor champion Pertida Felicien of Canada, and 2001 World Indoor and Outdoor champion Anjanette Kirkland.
Johnson also has planned a double in his future. His time of 7.43 seconds in the 60m hurdles at the Verizon Millrose Games is the fastest in the world this year, and earned him the Fred Schmertz Trophy as the meet’s top performer. The 1996 Olympic gold medalist in the hurdles, Johnson owns an unprecedented four world outdoor titles in the 110m hurdles, and has two world indoor titles in the 60m hurdles, from 1995 and 2003. Johnson also is an accomplished sprinter and was the 1998 USA outdoor runner-up in the 200 meters. His top competition in the hurdles will likely come from 2003 Pan Am Games gold medalist Larry Wade, while Mickey Grimes will give him a run in the 60m sprint.
Other top Americans scheduled to compete include 2003 USA Indoor Champion John Capel and 2001 World Indoor 200m gold medalist Shawn Crawford in the men’s 200m. Capel finished second in the men’s 60m dash at the Verizon Millrose Games last week. Defending 800m World Indoor Champion David Krummenacker, 2002 U.S. Indoor Champion Derrick Peterson and 2003 NCAA Outdoor 800m champion Sam Burley will compete in the men’s 800m. Krummenacker finished second in the men’s 800m last week at the Verizon Millrose Games.
2000 Olympic gold medalist Stacy Dragila will try to continue her momentum from last week, when she won yet another Millrose crown in the Visa women’s pole vault with a clearance of 4.64 meters/15 feet, 2.75 inches. Jillian Schwartz, who finished second at Millrose (4.25m/14-3.25), will challenge Dragila in the Visa women’s pole vault. Junior mile record-holder Alan Webb will make his 2004 Golden Spike Tour debut in the Tyson Foods men’s mile, as will Arkansas alumnus Seneca Lassiter.
Nicole Teter returns to her alma mater to compete in the Sunny D Intense Sport women’s 800m. In the men’s 3,000m, former Arkansas standout Daniel Lincoln will compete against current Arkansas sensation Alistair Cragg.
Sanya Richards will be competing in the Verizon women’s 60m dash. The 2003 NCAA and USA champion in the 400 meters, Richards posted an automatic NCAA qualifier in winning the 200-meter dash at the Houston Indoor Invitational with a time of 23.67.
The 2004 Indoor Golden Spike Tour continues with the 2004 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships at Boston’s Reggie Lewis Center, held February 27-29. On March 6-7, the USA Indoor Combined Events Championships will be held for the third consecutive year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
