Training is going well. I’m being patient though. Strength is going up every week, feeling pretty good. Yeah, you’re right it’s similar to “Designer Athletes”. I feel pretty fast with only 2 days of speed per week, and no deload yet either.
Winter Testing
Power Clean: 330 lbs., new PR and ties position record. Tied for 2nd on team.
Vertical Jump: 36". We tested on the Just Jump Mat, kinda weird.
Broad Jump: 10’5 (had 10’11 or so on another attempt but fell back)
Squat and bench are later in the week.
The jumping numbers are somewhat on the low range for me, but we’ve done little to no speed work or plyos recently. Instead, we’ve done a lot of conditioning work to get ready for spring ball in two weeks.
Finally back to testing at BU. Its been a while since Ive heard yall tested. Dont you still have the VJ record with like a 39. You probably are the strongest skill guy now that Paul Mosely left.
Ya I have the record at 38.5 inches. I’m confident that with a more reactive focus in our training I’ll go over 40" in the near future.
why dont bu combine guys test better then they do?? conditioning for spring ball - why??
Ive wondered why Big John has them do conditioning for spring ball also.
ole school. hes from north carolina same school mad dog came from, i would have to say hes better then mad dog but still love conditioning.
As far as I know I think most strength coaches are the same way with regard to speed and conditioning (i.e, no real speed work). Our summer training program places a much higher emphasis on speed and explosiveness than our spring training does for whatever reason.
i think u r right most coaches do but there are some out there at major div 1 schools who do true speed work in the winter and conditioning during the summer bc u dont have to be in shape for spring ball.
Ya I have to agree with you on that, I don’t necessarily agree with being in game shape for 15 spring practices. But you have to buy in to the program and work hard regardless of your beliefs on the issue. Spring ball is over on April 14th, which leaves me about 6-8 weeks to train speed and strength in an efficient manner before summer starts.
did u watch these guys workout?
BAYLOR: MARCH 5
A total of 18 players worked out on rubber track outside.
Player Position Gil’s comments
Anthony Arline DB Arline (6-1¾, 198) did position drills only and stood on his numbers from the Combine. He had a 36-inch vertical jump and a 10-5 long jump.
Daniel Sepulveda P Sepulveda (6-2 7/8, 226) did position drills only and stood on his numbers from the Combine.
Dominique Zeigler WR Zeigler ( 6-2, 181) ran 4.55 and 4.60 in the 40-yard dash. He had a 34½-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot long jump, ran 4.42 in the short shuttle and 7.18 in the cone drill.
C.J. Wilson CB Wilson (6-1 3/8, 195) ran 4.53 and 4.55 in the 40 and did 12 bench presses. He stood on the rest of his numbers from the Combine.
Paul Mosely RB Mosely (6-2 5/8, 240) ran 4.59 and 4.61 in the 40, had a 30½-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-9 long jump, 4.47 short shuttle, 7.37 cone and did 21 lifts.
Marcus Foreman DE Foreman (6-1 7/8, 255) ran 5.00 and 4.99 in the 40, 4.90 in the short shuttle and 8.22 in the cone drill. He also had a 30½-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-4 long jump and did 12 reps.
No I didn’t get to see the workout, it was held early in the morning and I had class. From what I heard the scouts added almost a tenth to all the 40 times because they were run on a track. I can tell you for sure that some of those numbers are not indicative of the strength/power levels of those guys. I would have liked to see Sep run the 40 and really open up some eyes, he ran faster than Arline at last years Junior Day and Arline is a 4.39 guy at the Combine.
what do u mean the numbers are not indicative of the strength and power levels of those guys, im just not looking at the 40yd but the jumps and lifts as well. willie andrews is another guy who ran ok at the combine but just didnt look explosive, is it the training program or these guys talent level? i agree most scouts tend to add a tenth for track and tenth for track spikes.
I wanted to see Sepulveda run too. On the record chart, he holds the record for the fastest LB and Punter with a 4.42. This guy is real athletic for just a punter. I also heard that Paul Mosely ran a 4.37 last year during a testing date? is this true? I think he deserves a shot at the NFL. C.J. and Ziggy’s 40’s are really going to hurt their draft status, but they both are real explosive players. But I do know that ziggy’s weight room numbers are very weak.
For example, Paul Mosley power cleans 372 and benches 385-400, yet he only knocked out 21 reps. I know that Willie and a few of the guys listed trained at Plex in Houston in preparation for the combine.
plex is full of shit, my best friend use to work there, they do nothing but machine shit and no squats or ol’s. 21reps isnt bad, my 1rep bp is 385 and i get 21reps, i only pc 350.
According to this paul only had a 30" Vert also. I think CJ and Arline also did combine prep at plex.
Ya I’m not too keen on what they do over at Plex. They seem to try and be extremely specific to the sport, from what I’ve heard they turn on the heat at times to simulate playing in warm weather. Although they do seem to draw big names year after year. As far as Combine Prep goes I would have to think that API is the cream of the crop. Parisi does a great job as well from what I’ve seen. Tom Shaw had 4 of the 5 fastest guys this year, I can only imagine what that does to further his rep. Perfect Competition down in Florida turned out some really good performances this year as well.
Tom Shaw isnt really known for his great training methods aka the “stick drill”. But he still had his guys run great times. Tom Shaw was Odell’s combine prep coach back in his day. I think the last I heard about him was him being a track coach at FSU, I think.
Ya I’ve seen some of his stuff and a lot of it does come off as gimmicky. I will say, however, that he does use a lot of good methods as well that Charlie advocates (push up starts, flying sprints/cone drills, etc.)
