Training start reactions

Hi All,

Couple of younger kids I’m working with are having trouble with there reaction to the gun.
In the past they have both predominantly been hurdlers, but currently have the build of middle distance runners. At the moment I’m working on their sprints with them.

There not coming out of the blocks that quickly, but I’m working on making it as clean as possible.

They both tend to sit through there running stride, one more so than the other - most of this tends to come from a lack of strength, so whilst I remind them to get tall before they run, I’m willing to let it slide somewhat as they get stronger.

The point behind this post…

Their reaction is letting them down hugely. All they’v been told to think about is movement of their left hand. Which has helped but not as much as I would have liked.

I’v been using CF’s drill lately (athletes standing, hands by there sides, react with arm split) but basically I’m looking for some other drills to use with the boys?

Any suggestions?

flyer i have posted on this actual topic numerous times but hey we are all here to help and do so i will

reactions…get a gun a let it off and they will jump…why because it will scare the s*** out of them…why because its a natural reaction to move when you get a scare.

while in the blocks educate your athletes to have a clear mind.personally i tell this method.have a clear mind…no thoughts what so ever…ifg you have a clear mind you will react fasster than anyone because your natural reaction will be to move automatically.

a gun goes off while you are doing your shopping in your local supermarket.you are doing your normal day to day stuff.relaxed clear mind a gun goes off real loud…what you do…you will automatically jump or move to the sound you heard.think about it…

Have you watched the Fundamentals DVD? It spends a fair amount of time on starts from the blocks. A very good purchase in my opinion.
