Track Career

I am just wondering how lucrative is it being a proffesional track and field athlete wether through sponsorships races endorsements etc what are the figures that these athletes earn.more specifically how much would an on average athlete on the European circuit earn A or B class:sing:

Probably just enough so you dont have to borrow money to keep calling yourself proffesional.

I got this from the new Sub 10 message board.

In April, the German magazine Leichtathletik published an article about athlete earnings. Here is the appearance fee that managers demand for various athletes, per race (for my compatriots: 1 euro = 1.17 U.S. dollars).

Men

  1. Haile Gebrselassie (ETH) 100,000€
  2. Hicham El Guerrouj (MOR) 80,000€
  3. Maurice Greene (USA) 60,000-80,000€
  4. Tim Montgomery (USA) 50,000-60,000€
  5. Wilson Kipketer (DEN) 25,000-30,000€
  6. Justin Gatlin (USA) 20,000-25,000€
  7. Nils Schumann (GER) 15,000-20,000€
  8. Colin Jackson (GBR) 15,000€
  9. Allen Johnson (USA) 10,000-15,000€
  10. André Bucher (SUI) 10,000-15,000€
  11. Felix Sanchez (DOM) 10,000-15,000€
  12. Yuri Borzakovsky (RUS) 10,000-15,000€

Women

  1. Marion Jones (USA) 60,000-80,000€
  2. Paula Radcliffe (GBR) 50,000€
  3. Zhanna Block (UKR) 25,000-30,000€
  4. Gail Devers (USA) 25,000€
  5. Gabriela Szabo (ROM) 20,000€
  6. Heike Drechsler (GER) 15,000-20,000€
  7. Stacy Dragila (USA) 15,000€
  8. Svetlana Feofanova (USA) 10,000-15,000€
  9. Ana Guevara (MEX) 10,000€
  10. Maria Mutola (MOZ) 10,000€
  11. Stephanie Graf (AUT) 10,000€
  12. Grit Breuer (GER) 5,000-10,000€

Of course, Colin Jackson has since retired. The article was published in April, I assume Guevara’s fee has since gone up? Leichtathletik says that in 2000, Timmy got about 1,000€ for a German meet so fast times definitely helped him.

Some swimmers make a nice living without AP fees…take advantage of sponsorships and endorsements.
