I dont know about LeBron being number 2 or A-Rod being on there at all.
Surprising there are no gymnists or MMA fighters from my perspective. And Liu and Wariner but no Bolt, Powell or Gay. But nice to see the sport represented by 3 athletes.
I found this very interesting. As a multi events coach I have to agree with them, and I do believe Roman is the greatest athlete (not only a great athlete, but a great guy too).
I am just wondering how poor Dayron Robles must feel. New WR and Xiang still makes the list in front of him.
Who is the world’s greatest female athlete in the world? Has to Carolina Kluft?!?
I don’t think Jeremy Wariner should be on there. I agree with the other two track picks, how could you not put a Brad Walker or Tero Pitkamaki on the list ahead of him.
When talking about speed and coordination I belive Jonathan Edwards outbeats Liu by far. Huge power, coordination, speed, massive wr, multiple wc and og medallist, very long career with huge jumps towards his final years, nice guy, a prominent figure of the sport.
There has also been discussion this week about Tiger being the greatest athlete in the world. I just find it difficult to think of someone who does not sweat as “a sportsman”. If you count him in there, you probably have to count some world poker champion or brilliant pool player.
many would say he isn’t an athlete but to achieve what he has and to swing the way he does you have to have fantastic athletic talent. Is he better than some others on the list as far as displaying that, probably not.
sid the kid? best player in the burgh since Super Mario…and took the worst franchise in the leg from almost moving to eastern conference champs in 3 years! James Smith thoughts…?
I was talking with Al Vermeil the other day and he was telling me about the stats he’s come across on the top golfing long drive “athletes”. Al does a lot of work with Titleist. He was saying that the top drivers have the top vertical jumps, top med-ball throws and other indicators of alactic ability (power, speed). I would assume that Tiger woods is no couch-potato and likely would have decent testing results in these types of tests based on his driving ability. If he didn’t have to take something off the ball to ensure accuracy, I’m sure he’d hit it very far.
I’d say he was a good athlete, likely not one of the top 10 in the world… But probably the best “competitor” in the world.
There was an article in Sports Illustrated a few years ago about the long-drive guys.
They asked one of them what he thought of people saying they weren’t “real golfers.”
The guy said something to the effect of “Every Saturday, all across America, guys get lucky and sink 80-foot putts. Nobody gets lucky and hits a 400-yard drive.”
Every time I hear someone talking about how technique is everything and power is nothing in one sport or another, I think of that quote.
I think the voting was kinda biased considering there are so many variables to look at. Also look the different sports, some require more speed, some require more hand to hand, etc. i hate to say it but golf is not a serious sport. You can be out of shape to play it. Dont get me wrong you have to have serious skill to play it but not the physical skill. I do give props to tiger woods cause he is the best there ever was
