For some weird and very strange reason 6 weeks ago when some of my athletes started back i decided for the first time in over a decade to join in and train with them just to drop some weight and try and get a touch fitter for the over 35’s soccer.
The last time i ran a 100m race i tore my hamstring in a nationals heat, missed running in the relay which from memory we may have even won and not long after that i had a back injury that saw me stop running altogether way back in 1990 i think damn where does time go.
In the ensuing 6 weeks i have dropped close to 3kgs in weight from the 89kgs i was, and talk about pain it was never this hard before, i guess turning 39 and a decade of nothing will do that to you.
got through my first session on the track in flats last thursday all of it has been on the hills or grass until now…
i was suprised how good they felt during but not so much after. I am now toying with the idea of running a few masters/vets races this year inc state relays for fun if the body holds up.
You’ve forgotten what it is like to be and athlete! Since the day I retired I’ve always felt better! My advice, 4 days a week and stop when you feel tired or stiff.
If you can run 36.5 for the 300, than you should be competitive from the novice mark. I think you would get more than the novice mark because you’re a veteran runner. Letters to the handicapper are my specialty.
Nanny, I don’t think you would need the limit to be competitive. I think the furtherest anyone is on in the NSWAL for 300m is 60m. That’s a pretty decent start.
You only have to run around 42s for the full 300m to be competitive off say 50m. (Run 250m). That’s 35s ast just 300m pace, it would be well inside 35s at 250m pace.
It wouldn’t be long before you are out on a mark that would allow you to be in the mix.
Worth considering.
What the NSWAL should be offering is regular Over 35’s 300m races to accommodate the growing number of veteran athletes.
Youngy do they have that in Tassie (I’m 35 in August). On a good day I might run 42 but it might also mean I get off my fat a— and do some running, considering I’m doing 3 weights sessions a week.
Nanny good to hear you have lost that weight and have a goal to lose a heap more.
yeah i am /was going good… nothing to flash but been doin the 4 x 200m session in a tick over 27 pace with a walk back rest,
am down to 84.4kgs now but rolled my ankle 2 weeks ago at jets training so have been doing bike and gym only… to be honest i needed the rest my legs were screwed, hills just aint as easy as they used to be - “thank god they are finished”
i have my NSWAL rego form here on my desk just in case
my program is not short to long or long to short i feel its more of a Slow to Medium pace approach
