I thought the forum might be interested in the NFL Combine/campus workout results of Terrence Newman. Newman is a cornerback from Kansas State who will most likely be drafted top 5 this year, hopefully by YOUR Dallas Cowboys!
Newman is also the two-time Big 12 100 meter dash champ. He ran a 10.2. He is the most highly regarded corner in the draft. Apparently he has some kind of nerve damage in his left shoulder that has just begun scaring off a few teams. To me, the 10.2 says it all.
Campus Agility Test
4.38 40 yard dash.
320 pound bench press.
780 pound āsafe squat.ā (what is a safe squat?)
329 pound power clean.
41.5 inch vertical jump.
NFL Combine Results
4.37 40 yard dash.
2.61 20 yards.
1.56 10 yards.
No bench press recorded.
No squat recorded.
3.83 shuttle run. (I assume this is the 5-10-5 shuttle drill but it doesnāt say.)
6.88 cone run. (I do not know what this is.)
Vertical jump - 41 inches.
Broad jump - 11 feet 4 inches.
i did a little poking around on the net and found the complete run down on the indy combine. the thing that jumps out at me was that no WRs or QBs took part in the bench press.
I donāt think they allow QBās to do the 225 test. I was in watching an on campus workout at a Pac-10 school, and the QB remarked that he would gladly go ahead and rep out, but the scouts said they did not want him to risk injury. Donāt know about the WRās.
I wonder why Newman choose to do a 1 rep max at his on campus workout. I was under the impression they only want the 225 test.
If safe squat is a leg press, then that is laughable. I have been told that leg presses have little if any athletic crossover because it does not utilize the lower back.
4.38 is pretty respectable, assuming fully electronic. If I recall correctly, that was Benās 40 yard split in 88, except that Ben had .13 reaction included in his time. Being only 13 hundreths behind one of the fastest starts of all time is mighty impressive, and would have beaten some of the finalists in 88 to the 40 yard mark.
Main idea is that football 40s are FAR from FAT. I believe some call it PAT (partially automatic timing). Bottom line is that ben johnson was timed at 3.7 by football scouts. A 4.38 guy would get to get embarrassed by ANY sprinter in the 1988 100m final (unless itās a female and not FloJo:) ). Sorry this is a pet peave of mine.
Thanks. Iām aware of the massive unreliability of football 40s, but was under the impression that the NFL Combine used FAT, making that 4.37 look pretty damn fast.
IF (and that is a big if) either 4.37 or 4.38 are legit FAT times, elite male sprinters would easily beat him to the 40yard mark, but not by all that much.
I can guarantee you that NFL Combine 40y times are not legit FAT times. Itās a āmanualā start and an electronic finish. I agree with you that if the NFL combine was FAT then a lot of football guys would be very competitive with Olympians. BTW, Terrence Newmanās 60m pb is 6.62.
