tempos on an elliptical

i can;t currently run because of a foot injury so i do tempos on an elliptical…i go 30 secs moderatly hard and then rest 30 seconds, and go like that for around 25 mins… The problem is that i can’t get a good cardio workout without having a greatdeal of lactic acid buildup when using the elliptcal… When running i can get a good cardio workout without hitting lactic acid threshhold… but when i try doing cardio on the elliptical without producing lactate, i just don’t get worked out at all… so i was wondering if doing tempos to lactic acid buildup on an elliptical would be ok… after all its not the same as running?

Is it lactic acid or is it just fatigue?

Pool work…

well my legs burn so im guessing its lactic acid… i don’t have acces to a pool… but what do you think about circuit training or hi rep low weight o-lifts?

I think the problem with “burning” while doing eliptical running, is because you didnt adapt… It is new to you and you feel sore!
Try doing 15s on, and 30-45s off

I would not suggest doing hi reps oly, because it is detrimental on your technique… try using something that is less complex… (medball throws, jumps in place etc)

BTW, dont acuse LA for everything!

Ive tried this and also feel burning (LA) in the legs especially quads but also hams. I think its due to the longer time under tension that the eliptical machine produces when compared to running. Im going to try and change the resistance and set/rest time to suit.

Be careful doing too much work on the elliptical. The footpads of the elliptical typically do not ‘float’ laterally, so the foot tracks wider than when you run (in running, your feet track under the midline of the hips/body like running on a lane line). The result is that the hips take up more stress as there is little rotation at the hip.

From my experience, athletes that do a lot of elliptical work to get away from the impact of running, actually can get significant hip pain and tightness. In some cases, the IT band tightens up.
