Monique Williams and David Ambler set New Zealand sprint records in Sydney

28/02/2009 11:48:16 p.m.
SYDNEY
Track Classic
Triple New Zealand sprint champion Monique Williams raced her way into the record book by eclipsing Kim Robertson’s long standing New Zealand national 200m record in Sydney last evening.
The 23 year old finished second to Jamaica’s Sherika Williams in 22.98s (+0.6) to break Robertson’s record of 23.13s set in Los Angeles in July 1978.
In the process Williams also qualified for selection to the world championships in Berlin in August bettering the A standard of 23.00s.
Earlier in the evening Williams ran for New Zealand in the 4 x 100m relay where they finished second in 45.21s and later contested the 100m finishing fifth in 11.80s (-1.7).
David Ambler also set a New Zealand record in the sprints, with a M19 100m record of 10.41s (+1.0) with his fifth placing. This broke Matt Brown’s New Zealand M19 record of 10.43s set in Brisbane in March 2006.
Beijing Olympic Games shot put gold medallist Valerie Vili followed up her 20.25m performance last week at Waitakere, winning the shot put with 20.09m. This broke her own meeting record of 19.78m set last year.
Beatrice Faumuina was third in the discus throwing 59.75m.
Veronica Torr was third in the 100m hurdles in 13.87s (+0.7), while Nikki Hamblin was runner up in the 800m in 2m 4.14s.
Jeffrey Thumath was fourth over 200m in 21.07s (-0.1) and James Dolphin fifth in 21.38s while the men’s relay team of Carl Van Der Speck, Craig Bearda, Dolphin and James Mortimer were third in the 4 x 100m event in a fresh Auckland record of 39.49s.
Mortimer collected seventh in the 110m hurdles in 14.17s (+0.0). Rebecca Cochrane was seventh in the long jump 4.81m (+0.3).
