Does he need my assistance? LOL…maybe one day
any word on who is likely to take over this coaching role?
i am aware of a few places he has tried without luck at this stage.
KK: would you come out of ‘retirement’ to coach Steffenson?
Just wondering who was his coach when he had his greatest success, and why did he change?
Contrary to the opinion once expressed on this forum, I actually really like Steff. He just needs to focus on the big picture and stop being paranoid about missing selection due to some notion that his national federation is against him (although I can see how he came to those conclusions!). The sport in Oz needs him more than he needs it, so he should stop fighting the selectors and get set to take on the rest of the world. The other things for sure he needs to look at is his motivation and goals and start charting a time-line that will enable him to fulfill the requirements for selection while at the same time enabling him to fulfill his ambitions.
And the frustrating thing is that I’m certain he knows all that, yet somehow got tangled up in shit fights all last domestic season.
The timeline issue though may be more important than many realise. If you return to training too late, you place yourself under dreadful pressure to set the base in place and leave enough time to get sufficient adaptation to more specific race pace wrapped up before the inevitable March selection trials in Australia.
Would I coach him? I’ve already told him I would, but he seems to want to do it the American Way which is fine. I love his fire. I just wish he’d be more careful and stop aiming the blowtorch in his own direction because it is so not necessary.
KK: i was actually being serious about you coaching him - i believe it would be perfect.
I believe, that after 06 Comm Games, he finished that season very very early. He was scheduled to race a couple of times in the states early in their domestic season, but pulled out (may have had 1 race) and then pulled the plug on the whole season.
Did he end up having too long off before '07? And was then playing catch up -injuries etc, then flowed into '08 with all sorts of problems
I believe KK would have a great influence on Steffenson - he seems to have a similar potential to that of an ex KK athlete who performed ‘quite’ well in late 80s, early 90s.
With all the respect to both sides, it’s not Kitkat’s issue/decision; this is one for the athlete Steffensen, I think.
KK What does J.S. consider the American system as Opposed to the Australian system or the system he was under. I did not know there was an American system.
Guys, please: (A) It’s not going to happen. John has his own ideas about how he wants to live out the rest of his competitive athletics career and the environment he prefers to operate within.
(B) It is not only John’s decision who he trains with. It is also the choice of any prospective coach. In my own case, it would take a powerful motivation to get me back into 24/7 active coaching mode because that’s the commitment it takes (time-wise) to be successful at this game.
(C) Jerry: I believed the term I used was “the American Way” (not “system” because we both know there are almost as many “systems” as there are coaches). What I implied was that John seems to enjoy the whole social context of training and living in the US, as distinct his previous experiences training in Australia.
(D) And everything I have said about John is just my personal opinion. I may be 100 per cent wrong, although I doubt it, and if I have misrepresented him I apologise although I do not see such speculation in this case as any sort of slander.
