Rugby site 1
there is another good one I can’t find right now, but here is a rundown a friend put together for someone else.
[i]
I’ll start with a quick rundown of the positions and if I can, how they relate to amercian football
The Forwards
Consists of 8 classically largermen
Numbers 1,2 and 3 comprise the front row (think warren sapp):
1- loose head prop, the main side that the scrum half puts the ball in, therefore key role involves stabilisation of the scrum to ensure clean bal for the hooker and pushing.
2- Hooker, man that “hooks” at the ball when it is put into the scrum by the scrum half, main role involves striking for the ball but can become a third prop when put in is not for his team
3- Tight head prop, classically the tight head is the primary pusher and stabiliser of the scrum
Numbers 4 and 5 make up the second row
4- Left hand side of the scrum and primary role of pushing into the prop, secondary role to guide ball to back of the scrum
5- Right hand side, very similar role to 4
Both these tend to be the tallest players on the pitch and are therefore the jumpers in the lineout, the props tend to be the lifters
Numbers 6,7 and 8 are the loose forwards
6- blindside flanker, primary cover for the short side of the pitch
7- open side flanker, primary aim is to attack fly half and is the main “get ball man”, ie if a breakdown occurs he is first there trying to win the ball back
think of the more classical athletic mode for this, terrel owens and the like
8- the number eight is the glue of the scrum and primary role is to secure the stability of the ball as it comes back from the front row, used as an extra option for pick up and go, tend to be shorter than second row but larger than flankers
Numbers 9 and 10 are the “brains” of the team
9- scrum half, main ball provider for all situations, george gregan is a great example, any breakdown and he is there to pass ball out to continue play, provides first line of cover from number 8 pick up, secondary role as short range attack in breakdown conditions. Think quarter back will bolocks!
10- Fly half, the play maker, fast thinker with great turn of pace, must be able to pass off both hands and create ideas in chaos. Tend to be better the taller they are, henry honniball is a great example, kicking and passing must be superb
Numbers 11,12,13,14 and 15 make up the rest of the backs
11 and 14- the wingers, left and right respectively, primary fast men to get the ball to and should be the “finishers”, think joe rocococko
12- inside centre, larger than outside centre, essential pivot in passing plays but must be able to take crash ball from flyhalf, therefore tends to be larger.
13- outside centre, fast feet and brain, essential link between the “play” and the finishers on the wing, must be bale to see space
15- fullback, primary role as cover for opposition attacking ball, makes up extra man in attacking line
Backs tend to be faster than forwards, classically:
The piano movers play with it (the forwards) then they let the concert pianists play with it (the backs)

In your case given your size definitely a back, whereabouts will depend upon what skills you already possess, speed and how quickly you learn.
