Starting Positions

  1. What are some good starting positions to employ for a team sports athlete (keep in mind I don’t have blocks)? I normally do a variety of positions such 3/4 pt stances, push up, jump/jogging back, standing, flying… are there any others I should be doing?

  2. I put my non-dominant leg forward (left) when I’m setting up a 3/4 pt stance (don’t know why I started doing it). I’ve read that you should put your dominant leg forward. I’ve tried doing this but it feels quite uncomfortable (haven’t timed the difference). Should I continue to set-up like I am or change it to put my dominant leg forward?

Set up in the way that is natural for you, otherwise you’ll have coordination issues at the start.

What surface do you train on and what sort of footwear do you use? I train on a dirt track and I dig a hole to get more traction on the 3-pt starts.

I also use falling starts, stomp the ground(like the fundamental dvd), and flying starts.

I train on grass with regular trainers (no spikes).

I’m not sure what stomping starts are as I haven’t seen the Fundamentals DVD yet.
