At what point in the training year, do you stop running sprints and have all your running basketball-specific whether it be games or practice sessions? Or is there always at least some form of sprint/acceleration training going on?
Also, what types of sprints are best suited for a basketball player? Thanks.
basketball-specific running would be either walking, or a slow jog. Sprints for Bball should be around the 10-20m mark. Get the Medicine ball DVD or the GPP DVD for some explosive meb ball stuff that will help out.
We have our athletes sprint in varying intervals throughout the pre-season. None of this work is done with a basketball; in fact (at the college level) we can’t use a basketball during these sessions!
Once practice has officially started, we do very little formal sprinting run by our S&C staff; practice tempo is kept high, and many times additonal sprinting at that point would serve little use to the athletes - other than getting them to hate us even more!
