Speed/Tempo volumes for field sports

I know in the past Charlie has suggested a ratio of about 20%/80% for speed/tempo ratio for soccer. So, for example, if the off-season tempo volume is at 4000m/week for a particular phase, does that mean the speed volume should be at 1000m/week?
This seems like a high volume of speed work for a soccer player? Is that correct or am i missing something here? I know this is rather elementary, so excuse my brain lapse for a moment. Thanks…

Could be 85% tempo and 15% speed if you prefer but 1000m per week isn’t a huge amount when you divide it up. Two sessions 500m per- three sessions is 333m per.

Gotcha.
Now another question…where do you see the speed and tempo volumes falling to for those athletes who are in their “off-season” but are playing for club teams that might practice 2x/week and play 1-2x/week?

You need to consider what is already being done to determine what remains to be done.

Practice & games = specific conditioning/tempo work

So it appears the answer is SPEED! With respect to the volume of work that is being done, of course.

There’s some speed in the play as well so there’d be some reduction in speed vol as well

Charlie,

Would the emphasis be speed at 85% and 10 % tempo would that change with player positions on the field? How many times should a soccer player lift weights? What type of lifts during the offseason?

Yes. For instance, my practices are mostly at low intensity so I normally use them as a tempo day. Sometimes I’ll do 1000m of tempo work before or after practice. Other times I’ll do high quality speed work before practice if I have to periodize my workouts around a game schedule.
