SA athletes book Commonwealth spots

Posted on 11 February 2006 - 18:17

The good news from the 99th SA national track and field championships in Port Elizabeth on Saturday was the qualification of several athletes for the Commonwealth Games, including three from the 400m hurdles.
One of the highlights of the second day was the performance of Ruben Ramolefi in the 3000m steeplechase.

Ramolefi’s winning time of 8:21.28 was well within the Melbourne qualifying time of 8:24.60 and this young man certainly has the potential and talent to return from Melbourne with a top three placing.

The second day of the championships started on a high note for Werner Appel, who bettered the national junior 20km walk record to 1:32.51, almost five minutes faster than Marc Mundell’s winning time in 2005.

Khotso Mokoena continued his winning form and booked his ticket to Melbourne with a 16.77m win in the triple jump. Hannes Hopley won the discus with a third round throw of 61.69m, more than 68cm further than Frantz Kruger’s win in 2005. Kruger is now based in Finland.

The race of the day was the 400m hurdles where the top three positions went to LJ van Zyl, Ter de Villiers and Alwyn Myburgh who all qualified with an A qualifying time for the Melbourne games next month. Van Zyl just managed to squeeze past De Villiers to claim gold in 48.63.

Sherwin Vries was in a class of his own in the 100m sprint, easily claiming the title in 10.27 and winning bronze in the 200m. Leigh Julius took the 200m title in 20.84s and Paul Gorries won the 400m in 45.93s, well within the Commonwealth qualifying standard.
