The two-day event was staged at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and mandatory for athletes hoping to make the South Africa team to the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia next month.

Van Zyl (48.63) dug deep on the home straight to overtake Ter de Villier (48.74) and Alwyn Myburgh (48.90) and win the 400m Hurdles. The victory meant a lot to both Van Zyl and the partisan home crowd.

“This is the track on which I won my first senior title three years ago when I was just 17 in 2003. It holds a special place in my heart and I was determined to win in my hometown,” said Van Zyl.

Former World Student champions Leigh Julius (20.84) breezed past Sherwin Vries (21.05) and Leeroys Newton (21.13) to the 200m for the third consecutive year. “I train on this track and I refuse to lose here,” said Julius. He is a third year physical educations student at the university.

Cheered on by the crowed, Paul Gorries overtook the defending champions Jan van der Merwe (46.25) barely 50m from the finish line to win the 400m in 45.93, his fastest time this year.

“After missing the national championships for two consecutive years, it was great to regain the title I won on this track in 2003. Now that I have got over my injuries I hope this is the start of a successful season,” said a delighted Gorries.

Earlier on Reuben Ramolefi (8:21.28) missed his target of setting a national record in the men’s 3000m Steeplechase. Nonetheless he won the race in a Commonwealth Games qualifier.

“I was on track to break the 8:19 mark until the last three laps. This gives me courage to try band achieve this land mark in the next two or three weeks,” said Ramolefi.

Later Nolene Conrad edged defending champions Tebogo Mashela in the sprint for the finish line to set a national record of 10:05.30 in the women’s 3000msteeplechase. Mashela (10:05.68) was also inside her old record of 10:06.05.

“It is a great relief to step out of the shadows of Mashela after three years of trying. After finishing second last year and third the year before, I was determined that this time I would win the race at the national championships,” said a delighted Conrad.

Other qualifiers for the Commonwealth Games were Sherwin Vries (10.28) in the 100m, Javelin throwers Hardus Pienaar (79.60) and Robert Oosthuizen (79.43), along with Khotso Mokoena (16.77) in the Triple Jump.

Veteran Shaun Bownes (13.83) dug deep to prevail in the 110m Hurdles just ahead of Hennie Kotze (13.85) to regain his national title. Ruan de Vries (13.96) was third.

Other winner where the promising junior distance runner Tshemano Setone (13:49.54) who clocked a career best to carry the day in the 5000m. The Phalula twins, Dina-Rose (2:02.43) and Lebo (4.23.48), won the women’s 800m and 1500m respectively. Geraldine Pillay retained her national title in 100m (11.51) and 200m (23.28) titles. Elsewhere Ramsey Carelse won the High Jump (2.20) Hannes Hopley (61.69) and Eizna Naude (59.02) won the men’s and women’s titles in the Discus Throw.
