Shin Splints: Check again

You complain about shin splints and yet you sprint on the road…

Spur of the moment…it was like an urge I had to get out.

yahhh…I dunno

I found a better field of grass to run on…pretty even and more smooth…but still more impact pain…particularly in the left shin. Other than that though, my form felt even better today. I felt relaxed…nice open stride…not leaning back…dorsiflexing…nice runs. Did those hip/pelvis stretches before the runs too…

Do you get enough sleep?

I just started sleeping more lately…up from 6-7 hours to 10+ hours now.

I did one of the stupidest things…and decided to do a 100m sprint at the track to test my speed with spikes.

Needless to say…I HAVENT LOST A THING. HOLY SHIT I FELT FAST AS HELL…I felt so fast I smiled during the sprint…it was like a blur to me. I felt all of the air pushing against my face at top speed…and there was no wind( as far as I could tell)…didnt even use blocks either.

What I noticed though was my hips or lower back must be tight…because I felt my hips shift back at top speed and I started leaning backwards…

man…it just feels so good to know I haven’t gone to waste totally!!! I am almost tempted to say this was a PR…just going by feel…but i dunno

yeah speed takes awhile to go away. for me to get back to my best 100m performance it takes me a week or so.

haha, but dude, I haven’t seriously trained speed since july 2005…im just extremely happy right now. Even though I still have pain, that made me the happiest ive been in a while.

Maybe you should train tempo all the time and lift weights and then enter track meets here and there ??? Heck… maybe it’ll work for you! Plus it makes you happy

Hehe I’m so unsure of what to do…thats the worst part! I think if I’m diligent enough, I could train but I’d have to focus on recovery like a madman.

I vote for the madman

And I’m just saying that because I can tell you really want it!

Maybe but check this out…there’s a guy who does prolotherapy around me, so I’m actually thinking of getting it done. I’m scared of needles though, especially those long ones =/

Never heard the word prolotherapy before… is it like acupuncture? (cause you mentioned needles…)

Basically they inject you where the injury is with something that causes inflammation, thus stimulating the body to heal and rebuild again. It sounds promising…kinda.

well screw that…costs too much money

the shins are feeling really great lately, but I havent run a step in a couple weeks. I’m probably just gonna end up resuming training again by September…start off GPP in the appropriate season anyways…after I give my body one more month to just rest, and sort out a few kinks.

Okay…update:

I don’t wanna jinx myself at all, but my shins have felt GREAT for 2 whole weeks!!! This is by far a huge improvement!! I was planning on going back to training this upcoming monday…because I feel nearly 100% now…but I’m worried that I’m just gonna make them worse again.

I FEEL like I can handle it now, but what if I just make them worse again? It will have been 3 weeks of pure rest from any running/lifting whatsoever by monday. The plan was a thorough warmup…then just a few 10 and 20m sprints…low volume speed workout.

However…I’m also thinking…should I give myself say…3 more weeks of rest to possibly get 100%?? I feel maybe 8.5/10 now with the shins…which is pretty darn good!

Advice guys?

should feel fine just warm up on grass do tempo on grass and sprint with spikes on track. If the pain comes back it will come back slowly so you would know if something is going wrong before worse comes to worse.

I didn’t read all 12 pages of your shin splint saga, but have you considerd Deep Posterior (or Anterior, or Medial) Compartment Syndrome?

TNT

I have, and doubt its that because they dont get extremely swollen and pumped…and the pain improves as the shins get warmed up.

Senri- I gotta see how my work schedule looks…otherwise, I think Monday is on!

GOOD LUCK !! If we are well in tune, you should be fine, because my shin splints are gone
