Large Jamaican squad for Paris
Sunday 17 August 2003
The Jamaican Amateur Athletics Association last week announced a 46 member squad for the 9th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, Paris 2003 Saint-Denis (August 23 to 31).

National record holders and Pan American Games champions, men’s High Jumper Jermaine Mason and women’s sprint Hurdler Brigitte Foster head the team which features 26 men and 20 women, the largest ever to represent Jamaica at the World Championships.

Many time national champion Sandie Richards who pulled up in the first round of the women’s 400m at the national championships, is included in the women’s squad after proving her fitness over the last couple of weeks. Richards will run in the 400m along with World and Olympic silver medallist Lorraine Fenton, and Allison Beckford.

Lorraine Fenton is one of the firmer bets for gold, though despite having run sub-50 seconds for the 400m on three occasions this summer (49.71), she will have trouble resting gold from Mexico’s World leader Ana Guevara (49.11).

Number one IAAF World ranked 400m runner Michael Blackwood, Pan American Gold 100m medallist Michael Frater, and teenage 100m and 200m sensation Usain Bolt, and national 100m champion Asafa Powell are also in the squad.

Olympic 400m bronze medallist Gregory Haughton, and women’s 400m Hurdler Debbie Ann Paris the Olympic fourth placer, are injured and were not considered for selection.

Top Athletes Primed for World Track and Field Championships
(Ottawa, August 12, 2003) – Athletics Canada is sending a small but very strong and focused team to the upcoming IAAF World Championships in Athletics taking place in Paris, France, August 23-31.

For the majority of events, the 28 selected athletes had to finish in the top four at the 2003 Canada Dry National Championships and meet tough performance standards during certain time periods over the last year in order to be considered for selection.

“This is an extremely well-prepared team – each member has had to repeat qualifying standards and show that they are in their best form before they go to Paris,” says Alex Gardiner, Athletics Canada’s chief technical officer and national team head coach. “Everyone we’ve selected is a proven athlete on the international scene. While their focus is currently on the world championships, they’re also preparing for the Athens Olympics next year.”

At the last IAAF World Championships, held in Edmonton in 2001, Canada sent a team of 75 athletes (41 men and 34 women) which saw a total of 16 top-16 performances, nine top-8 performances and one silver medal by Jeff Adams of Toronto in the 1500m wheelchair event.

The following athletes have been approved for nomination to the 2003 IAAF World Championships team by Athletics Canada’s selection committee.
